Unless you live under a rock, you already know about the shooting, if you did, you also wouldn't have internet access. There is far more questions about this than answers and it's likely they won't be answered for several days. I also think the university has come under an attack that isn't necessary. Everyone needs to realize that the students are adults, they're not 15 year olds. There could, of course, be an exception or two.
People are saying that the university should've canceled classes and locked down the school after the initial shooting of two people. This isn't high school. There isn't a few hundred or a few thousand students. The enrollment for VT is around 24,000. That is a city. You cannot shut a city down because of a shooting. They're not even sure if the two incidents are related, it could be a separate incident. One thing that I do agree with is that they should've notified the students immediately. It could've been something as simple as an email stating there was a shooting on campus and to be cautious and vigilant.
People also want to use the bomb threats in past weeks to blame the university for a lack of heightened state of alert. Bomb threats are almost always just that, a threat. If you were going to bomb something, why would you warn the people/place you wanted to bomb? It wouldn't make sense. It would be just a waste of time and resources to over-react to a bomb threat.
Parents are already demanding the VT president and VT police chief be fired.
In my opinion, the president of VT and the VT police did the right thing. In all aspects of this, they assumed the first the shootings were isolated and that the shooter had left campus. I would guess that 99% of people surveyed would not think, what appears to be a lover's quarrel, would wind up being the largest school shooting spree in history. This was a tragedy and there's very little that could've been done to avoid that. The blame game has already started and the person that deserves all the blame, is not being blamed. That person is the shooter(s).
Finally, I think the media overkill on situations like this does more harm than good. Somewhere, some lunatic is sitting on his bed cutting his arms wondering, "How can I top that?". I don't know what time the coverage started, but I saw it about 10:30am EST. It is now 10:30pm and they are still asking people questions which no one knows the answers. It's the same thing over and over again. They interview student after student and they have no idea what's going on. They only know what gets trickled down and spread around.

***UPDATE 11:25PM***
The VA Tech newspaper. Has plenty of info. It's currently being redirected to the parent site of Collegemedia.com.
Kinda feel bad for this guy. He was being accused of being the shooter. You can't blame some for thinking that. Take one look at his livejournal blog and you could easily think he was the shooter.
Here's some video from today.
It was only a matter of time before it was the President's fault. I'm not a gun "enthusiast", but I've never seen a 9mm with a high-capacity ammo magazine. There hasn't been any info on what type of 9mm it was, but I can assume it was something like this. It could be one of these, which can use the larger magazine, but I doubt it. It's not something you could hide easily.
***UPDATE 12:00am 4/17***
The gun was probably obtained ILLEGALLY.
***UPDATE***
There's a leak that somehow the gun was purchased legally, still can't figure out how. He was here on a student visa which would prevent him from legally owning a gun, per ATF.
As you may be aware, Section 121 of Public Law 105-277, the Omnibus Appropriations Act for 1999, amended the Gun Control Act of 1968 to prohibit, with certain exceptions, the transfer to and possession of firearms by aliens admitted to the United States under a nonimmigrant visa. This definition includes, in large part, persons traveling temporarily in the United States for business or pleasure, persons studying in the United States who maintain a residence abroad, and certain foreign workers. Therefore, you, as a Federal firearms licensee, are prohibited from transferring firearms to aliens that fall within this category. |
Also, this was one of the guns, and this was the other one. This has not been confirmed yet. Apparently, the serial number was scratched off both guns.
