Northern Ohio Evening Oddity. 20+ Jets In Less Than An Hour

While I was out fishing at the Norwalk Reservoir Wednesday evening with my brother, we noticed three bright lights coming from the northeast (which be Cleveland area). At first we thought we were about to have a close encounter, but then seen the flight lights.

As we stood there and watched, we seen 3 more heading our way. All in all, from 8:45-9:30pm, approximately 20+ jets, in groups of 3, flew over in succession. Half of the jets would break in the same location and head west, and the other half would continue southwest.

The odd thing is that they were flying fairly low, fairly fast, and we couldn't hear them. The only way we knew they were jets was because after they traveled a distance from us, we could see a pair of short contrails. I don't know what kind of jets they were (commercial or military), it was dark.

Last year, a UFO sighting over Lake Erie prompted the Youngstown Reserve AFB, and Wright-Patterson AFB to scramble dozens of jets, but those bases are southeast and southwest of my location.

Navy Security Team Fires Warning Shots At Iranian Boats

It's all fun and games until someone gets shot at. The IRGC have been harassing Navy ships for a while now, maybe this little incident will make them rethink their shenanigans.

A vessel contracted by the Navy in the Persian Gulf fired warning shots Thursday on two Iranian fast boats.

The Iranian Navy countered U.S. defense officials claims Friday, saying on Iranian television station Alalam that they didn't have a confrontation with a U.S. ship and that the ship, the Westward Venture, may have fired on a non-Iranian vessel, Reuters reports.

The U.S. ship is contracted by the U.S. Military Sealift Command to carry military cargo to Kuwait. It fired upon the boats Thursday after attempts to get Iranian boats' attention failed, defense officials told FOX News.

A Navy security team, armed with M16 rifles and .50-caliber machine guns, was onboard the Westward Venture at the time the warning shots were fired.

The ship was about 50 miles off the coast of Iran when the fast boats approached. The Westward Venture attempted to make bridge-to-bridge contact to warn the fast boats that they were too close.

The Military Sealift Command vessel then blew its whistle and fired flares before finally firing warning shots with the machine gun when the boats came within 100 yards of the vessel.

Brand-New Iranian Weapons Found In Iraq

Some of the weapons found were rockets and EFP's. The EFP's can penetrate armor. Reports of Iranian weapons being smuggled into Iraq, and Iranian-trained fighters in Iraq have yet do anything to wake people up.

The U.S. military says it has found caches of newly made Iranian weapons in Iraq, leading senior officials to conclude Tehran is continuing to funnel armaments into Iraq despite its pledges to the contrary.

Officials in Washington and Baghdad said the purported Iranian mortars, rockets and explosives had date stamps indicating they were manufactured in the past two months. The U.S. plans to publicize the weapons caches in coming days. A pair of senior commanders said a presentation was tentatively planned for Monday.

[...]

Iran has long denied that its government knowingly funneled weapons into Iraq or trained Shiite militants there. It has derided the U.S. claims as propaganda. Several senior U.S. military officials said the weapons caches would undercut the Iranian denials and provide new evidence of continuing Iranian support for Shiite militants across Iraq.

"You can see the manufacturing dates right on the armaments themselves," one senior commander in Baghdad said. "These are very clearly weapons that were made in the last month or so."

Four Iranian-Backed Fighters Killed In Iraq

Look away. Nothing to see here. Iran would never meddle in Iraq.

Coalition forces killed four Iranian-trained “special groups” criminals and detained five other suspected criminals today in Rashidiyah, Iraq, north of Baghdad.

Intelligence sources led the forces to the location of a criminal suspected of receiving weapons and finances from Iran. He also is suspected of directing and conducting kidnappings and sectarian violence against Iraqi citizens.

Despite receiving sporadic small-arms fire attacks, coalition forces apprehended the suspected criminal and three other suspects. As the forces approached a second location to apprehend another suspected criminal, they came under small-arms fire from both sides of the road and returned fire, killing one criminal.
After arriving at the targeted individual’s location, the forces again came under small-arms fire from three criminals atop a local residence. Coalition forces followed the three individuals to a home in the neighborhood then came under attack from the criminals inside the house. They engaged the hostile threat, killing the three criminals. The engagement ignited a fire in the house, but coalition forces were able to evacuate residents from the building unharmed.

NATO Troops Get Lost, Accidentally Cross Into Pakistan & Kill 12 Terrorists

Accidents happen. I'm sure it all looks the same there. It could be quite difficult to determine if you're in the Afghani shithole or the Pakistani shithole.

Around a dozen militants and personnel of the paramilitary Frontier Corps were killed in aerial bombardment by US warplanes and subsequent attack by a joint ground force of Nato and Afghan National Army on Pakistani post on the Pak-Afghan border at Bajaur Agency here on Wednesday.

US planes and choppers were seen violating Pakistan's air space in Bajaur Agency throughout the day. The attack came after Taliban targeted three Afghan border police posts near Nawapas Tuesday night.

Woman Mistakes Man In Porno For Boyfriend, Aggravated Assault & Battery Ensues

This is straight out of a Jerry Springer show. A guy and his girlfriend are watching porn, she thinks the actor is him, & then she whips out a knife and tries to kill him.

A woman is accused of chasing her boyfriend with a knife after thinking he was an actor in a pornographic movie they were watching together.

The victim says it all started when he and his girlfriend were inside his southwest Albuquerque home watching a pornographic move at 10:30 Wednesday morning.

That’s when the victim called 911 saying his girlfriend, 20-year-old Amanda Montoya, had a knife.

“She almost shanked me and everything. She put the (expletive) knife right under my throat," the victim told a 911 operator.

The victim, wearing only a pair of shorts took off down Five Points, begging the 911 dispatcher for help.

[...]

Deputies arrested Moya and charged her with aggravated assault and aggravated battery.

She was also charged with child abuse because deputies say she left her eight-month-old boy alone in the home while she chased her boyfriend down the road.

Ohio State Rep. Barrett Shows Nude Photos During Student Presentation ***UPDATED*** Barrett Resigns

...at my former high school. I would like to note that I didn't vote for him.

Back to the story. Rep. Matt Barrett (D-58th District) was showing a powerpoint presentation to a government class at Norwalk High School when a picture of a nude woman appeared. Why he wouldn't preview the presentation remains a mystery. He said he never used the flashdrive until now. I would want to make sure it worked before giving a presentation. But, hey, Democrats are not known for their intelligence.

A state representative briefly flashed a photo of a topless woman to a class of high school seniors yesterday.

State Rep. Matt Barrett, D-58th district, was at Norwalk High School yesterday to give a presentation on the state legislative process.

Barrett said he has no idea how the photo got onto the flash drive he plugged into the computer.
Before beginning with his presentation, Barrett said, he inserted his flash drive into a computer belonging to the class instructor.

What flashed onto the screen was not a PowerPoint presentation about state government, but an ''inappropriate picture of a female,'' Barrett said.

''It took me probably a second or so to look at it and say, 'That's not the Power Point,''' Barrett said, adding that the image was off the screen within seconds. He said the pictures was on the screen so briefly, the instructor didn't even notice the image.

''It was extremely embarrassing and we had no clue that anything like that was on there,'' Barrett said.

After his presentation, Barrett said he spoke to the principal of the school, the district superintendent and the information technologies director.

''I sat down and gave them my laptop,'' Barrett said.

Norwalk City Schools Superintendent Wayne Babcanec said Barrett was cooperative and forthcoming with officials.

Babcanec said police took statements from each of the 19 students in the senior social studies class and the school attempted to reach the parents of all the students.

Norwalk police Capt. Eric Hipp said detectives were working on the investigation. Hipp said he could not comment further because an incident report was not complete yet.

''Some of the students didn't even notice the pictures, they were up so quickly,'' Babcanec said.
''Mr. Barrett was embarrassed and apologetic. I believe this was an unfortunate and unintended incident,'' Babcanec said.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol was also called to investigate because Barrett is a state employee. The Highway Patrol still has his computer and flash drive, Barrett said.

Lt. Tony Bradshaw, Highway Patrol spokesman, said in addition to interviewing students, the agency will analyze what's on the computer and flash drive to try to see where it came from.

''I volunteered my computer -- absolutely,'' Barrett said. ''We're trying to get to the bottom of this. What is it and how is it on there?''

Barrett said the flash drive he was using belongs to him, but was given to him as a gift from the State Library of Ohio. He said he believes many legislators and aides received them.

***UPDATE***

Supposedly; it was "his child" that put the nude photo's on his flash drive. Sure it was.

A minor child in State Rep. Matt Barrett's home downloaded photos of topless women that Barrett accidentally showed during a presentation to Norwalk High School students Tuesday morning, according to the Ohio Democratic Caucus.

Barrett, when reached by phone last night, declined further comment and referred the reporter to the caucus' statement.

''From what we have learned thus far this is an internal family matter,'' Barrett said in a statement given by Phil Saken, communications director for the Ohio Democratic Caucus. ''We want to put this behind us.''
House Democratic Leader Joyce Beatty said the apparent mishap is not a political issue.

''I don't think it's a political situation because he made it very clear he didn't download or do this,'' she said in a statement.

[originally posted 10/4/07 12:37am]

***UPDATE 4/25/08 1:45AM***

Well it comes as no surprise to me that Rep. Barrett was less than truthful about how the nude photo appeared on his flash drive. Now, he has resigned.

The Ohio House Democratic leader says a state lawmaker whose computer displayed an image of a topless woman during a presentation to high schoolers has resigned.

[...]

Democratic leader Joyce Beatty said today that Barrett acknowledged not being truthful about the matter and she immediately demanded his resignation. "It became clear that Rep. Barrett had not been forthright with me and his colleagues," Beatty said in a statement.

A spokesman for House Democrats declined to elaborate.

***UPDATE 4/25/08 3:05PM***

Fmr. Rep. Barrett decided to elaborate.

After first blaming his teenage son for an embarrassing incident involving a nude photo shown to a high-school class, state Rep. Matthew H. Barrett apparently admitted to Democratic leaders Wednesday night that not only were the pictures his, but he knew the woman in that photo and the women in other such photos.

New Dem Slogan: Beating Cripples So You Don't Have To

Laura and Jenna Bush were talking about the childrens book they wrote, some jackass thought it would be a good time to protest the Iraq phase of the War on Terror. The girls parents tell him to shut up, he then proceeds to repeatedly punch a wheelchair-bound 18 year old with cerebral palsy.

A man heckling First Lady Laura Bush and daughter Jenna outside the 92nd Street Y was arrested after he punched a wheelchair-bound girl whose parents had told him to shut up, authorities said Wednesday.

German Talis, 22, was shouting obscenities at the Bushes, who were leaving the building Tuesday, when he crossed paths with Wendy and John Lovetro and their daughter Maureen, 18, who has cerebral palsy.

They had been in the audience to hear the Bushes talk about their children's book, "Read All About It."

"He began yelling about Iraq and Iran at Jenna Bush. She was waving at the crowd. I told the guy, 'What are you doing? Shut up. This is about a child and books,' " said John Lovetro. "He was unperturbed. I said, 'Get out of here! You're being a moron!' "

WWE Monday Night Raw Democratic Primary Smackdown

If you didn't get to see the whole thing, that's too bad, because it was funny. I had planned on uploading it, but I recorded it to my DVR then recorded it to DVD, and for some reason I couldn't get it to copy to my computers. Oh well, at least someone was able to do it. It's not the whole thing, but good enough.

Sunday, Coalition forces detained two suspects during an operation targeting an AQI terrorist who conducts bombings against Coalition and Iraqi Security forces.

The Consequences Of An Israel-Iran Nuclear Exchange

The consequences? Iran loses. Big time.

An assessment written by Anthony Cordesman gives a guess-timate of the results of a nuclear exchange between Israel and Iran. Cordesman is a former director of intelligence assessment for the secretary of defense, former director of policy and planning in the Department of Energy, and now at the Center for Strategic & International Studies.

...some 16 million to 28 million Iranians dead within 21 days, and between 200,000 and 800,000 Israelis dead within the same time frame. The total of deaths beyond 21 days could rise very much higher, depending on civil defense and public health facilities, where Israel has a major advantage.

It is theoretically possible that the Israeli state, economy and organized society might just survive such an almost-mortal blow. Iran would not survive as an organized society. "Iranian recovery is not possible in the normal sense of the term," Cordesman notes.

The difference in the death tolls is largely because Israel is believed to have more nuclear weapons of very much higher yield (some of 1 megaton), and Israel is deploying the Arrow advanced anti-missile system in addition to its Patriot batteries. Fewer Iranian weapons would get through.

The difference in yield matters. The biggest bomb that Iran is expected to have is 100 kilotons, which can inflict third-degree burns on exposed flesh at 8 miles; Israel's 1-megaton bombs can inflict third-degree burns at 24 miles. Moreover, the radiation fallout from an airburst of such a 1-megaton bomb can kill unsheltered people at up to 80 miles within 18 hours as the radiation plume drifts. (Jordan, by the way, would suffer severe radiation damage from an Iranian strike on Tel Aviv.)

Some People Just Piss Me Off

If you've read this dumpy blog before, you may or may not know that I manage a grocery story. Ok, so that explains why I know the following situation first-hand. Now, on with the story.

I was notified that the local police department gave a $15 Salvation Army certificate to a "homeless" man and he would be coming in to purchase some items. The reason I say "homeless" is because this was the cleanest looking homeless man I've ever seen. He wasn't dirty, was clean shaven, and his clothes were fairly nice. My guess is that he was homeless for about 15 minutes.

So anyways, he comes in, grabs a 20oz lemonade, and asks for a pack of Newport cigarettes (I didn't know this was the "homeless" man at the time). So I ring his stuff up and he hands me the $15 certificate. It clearly states "no alcohol or tobacco". The following is our exchange:

Me: "You can't get the cigs".

Him: "Can't you make an exception".

Me: "No".

Him: "I will just take the lemonade"

Me: "You need to get more stuff because I'm not giving you cash back"

Him: "I will just take it back and go somewhere else to shop"

Me: "Ok, see ya"

So I'm pretty ticked at the whole thing because it's now obvious he is trying to scam everybody.

A while later he comes back with his certificate and decides to buy some stuff. He buys a few groceries and then grabs some bottles of 16oz Gold Peak tea at $2.49 a bottle. I just loved the way he tried to stretch his dollars. So, his total comes to $13 and some cents. Again, the following is our exchange:

Me: "You need to get some more stuff, I already told you that I'm not giving you change"

Him: "It's close enough, why can't you just give it to me"

Me: "Because until it's $15, you're not close enough. If you go over I will take the difference off to drop it to $15.

Him: "Jesus Christ, it's just a dollar and change"

So he grabs another tea at $2.49. He needs to rot in a gutter, covered in his own urine.

Ok, done with my rant.
