Al-Qaeda Announces Jihad In India

This has been going on in the Kashmir region of India for some time now.

SRINAGAR: The city police are verifying the contents of a CD distributed by an outfit claiming to be ‘al-Qaeda fil Hind’ announcing “Jehad-al-Hind”. The disk, together with a five-page transcript, was sent to several news organisations, saying 1,000-odd CDs had been distributed amongst people during Friday congregations.

The CD shows a hooded young man reading out in local accented Urdu: “When we compare the 17 years of Jehadi movement in J&K with global Islamic movements like Iraq, Afghanistan, Chechnya, Somalia, Philippines, Algeria and others, there is a striking difference. The target and objectives of the global movements are clearly a systemic change at the global level, end of borders and creation of Khilafat. The Jehad of J&K has been the victim of organised global conspiracy that made it a battle between India and Pakistan over a piece of land and fight over interests of different countries.”

In combat gear and a Kalashnikov, the man identified as Abu Ibrahim al Qasim reads it on behalf of Abu Abdul Rehamn Ansari, the so called leader of Indian al-Qaeda.

The 15.25-minutes speech ‘Paygam’ (the message) starts with excerpts from the Quran, followed by an Arabic song and a flag — globe holding a black flag with ‘Kalima’ written on it. The reader is attacking almost everybody from either side of Kashmir’s highly divided political landscape and even terms Muzaffarabad based militant alliance United Jehad Council (UJC) “worse” than Hurriyat.

Washington Man Drowned Child for $200,000 Insurance Policy

Is there a punishment vicious enough to ensure justice is served on this "man"?

The firefighters who tried to save 3-year-old Ashley McLellan, unconscious after being pulled from a pool on a winter night in 2003, noticed something strange about her stepfather: He was calm, mostly dry and never once asked them if she would live.

She didn't, and Joel Zellmer was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of killing her in an attempt to collect on a $200,000 insurance policy — just one accusation in a string of accidents that investigators say Zellmer concocted to befall the young children of the women he dated.

Investigators say Zellmer has a history of dating single mothers, urging them to take out insurance policies and harming their children, including burning the hands of one and giving another a hot cup that blistered her lips.

Palestinians Use U.N. Vehicle In Terror Attack

This is the same article linked at LGF , yet it's not. I noticed that some of the article has been changed since Charles posted at 11:27am EDT. In about 3 1/2 hours, the Times changed this article to where the second paragraph is completely different from the original and the last paragraph quoted has been changed.

JERUSALEM, June 9 — At least four Palestinian gunmen using an armored vehicle and grenade launchers broke through Israel’s border fence from Gaza today and fought a gun battle with Israeli soldiers, while Israeli troops entered Gaza near the southern town of Rafah to search for weapons and tunnels used to smuggle arms and explosives from Egypt.

One of the Palestinian gunmen was fatally shot after the armored vehicle, labeled “TV,” crashed through the border fence at the old Kissufim crossing, near Deir al-Baleh, according to the Israeli Army. A spokesman for Islamic Jihad, Abu Ahmed, said three gunmen four had returned to Gaza. But the Israeli Army said they were still searching the area.

The attack evoked the Hamas raid into Israel a year ago, in which several Israeli soldiers were killed and another, Cpl. Gilad Shalit, was captured. He is still being held somewhere in Gaza. Negotiations for a prisoner exchange have been intermittent but have thus far faltered over Hamas demands for prisoners Israel does not want to release.

Abu Ahmed, the spokesman for Islamic Jihad, told Gaza radio stations that at least four militants had broken through the Gaza border fence and were fighting Israeli troops. “It is difficult to storm,” he said. “But when they entered in a surprise, they confused the enemy.” He said the raid had been carried out with the help of members of the Al Aksa Martyrs Brigades, affiliated with Fatah.

An Israeli Army spokesman confirmed that “four or five gunmen infiltrated through the border fence into Israel.” They approached an Israeli Army post and there was a gunbattle, in which the Israelis confirmed the fatal shooting of one man.

The gunmen used an armored jeep with United Nations markings to ram the border post, according to Abu Ali, a spokesman for the Al Aksa brigades. The Israeli Army, which has the jeep, said it was marked “TV,” the standard way that all the press signify their vehicles.

1 KILLED, 12 DETAINED IN RAID ON AL-QAEDA NETWORK

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Coalition Forces killed one terrorist and detained 12 suspected terrorists during operations targeting the al-Qaeda in Iraq network Friday in Anbar province.

Based on information gained from an operation May 27, Coalition Forces raided several buildings northeast of Fallujah.  After they announced their presence through an interpreter, one terrorist outside the building threw a hand grenade at the ground forces.  Coalition Forces took appropriate self-defense measures and engaged the armed terrorist with small arms fire, killing him.

Coalition Forces searched the buildings and detained 12 suspected terrorists on scene for their alleged involvement in the al-Qaeda in Iraq network.  Information gained from earlier operations indicates the suspects are involved in indoctrination for al-Qaeda in Iraq.  In one ceremony conducted by the network, those who declined to join the terrorist group were killed.

AFGHAN CIVILIANS PUSH ENEMY INSURGENTS FROM THEIR DISTRICTS

BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – More than several hundred Afghans and village elders from the Ali Khail (Jaji) and Laja Ahmad Khail districts of Paktya province forced enemy insurgents out of their villages June 4.

The Afghan villagers were angered over the enemy insurgent presence in their area and informed Afghan National Police and Coalition forces. Taking matters into their own hands, Afghan civilians confronted the insurgents and took their weapons.  They also told the enemy insurgents they were no longer welcome in their districts.

Afghan residents near Chamkani also stopped enemy insurgents from bringing fighters, suicide bombers and material from Pakistan through the area. Two weeks ago, Chamkani ANP members intercepted two suicide bombers after receiving information from the local populace. As a result, one suicide bomber was not able to harm anyone and blew himself up.

During that same time period, Afghan civilians came to the aid of two Afghan Border Control Points and repelled enemy forces as they attempted to overrun the positions.

Two days ago, in neighboring Paktika province, local tribal members near Shkin pursued enemy insurgents near the Pakistan border after the insurgents killed two civilians and injured several others during an enemy direct fire attack on the local bazaar.

In Khowst province, the local populace have pledged their support to serve and protect the region from anti-government forces and assist the local legitimate government. Additionally, Afghan civilians have expressed their support to assist local checkpoints in the Zambar region.

Over the past three weeks, Afghan National Security Forces have made great strides in providing security and stability in Eastern Afghanistan with the support and assistance of the local Afghan populace.

Official Says JFK Terror Probe Widening

Of course it is. It would take more than 4 men to carry out the plan.

The investigation into the thwarted plot to bomb John F. Kennedy International Airport is widening beyond the four men in custody, with more suspects sought outside the U.S. for their suspected roles, a law enforcement official said Friday.

The defendants identified last weekend were "just a piece of it," the official told The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because of not being authorized to speak publicly. "We are definitely seeking more players. We are targeting others overseas."

The official declined to provide details about the possible suspects, or in what countries they are being sought.

Man Bleeds Green Blood

WOW

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, June 8 (UPI) -- Doctors in Vancouver were stunned when the man they were operating on turned out to have dark green blood.

No, the man was not following in the steps of "Star Trek's" fictional Mr. Spock -- a Vulcan with green blood, BBC News reported.

The 42-year-old patient's unusually colored blood was caused by a migraine medication called sumatriptan, BBC News reported Friday.

The medication caused a rare condition where sulfur is incorporated into the oxygen-carrying red blood cells, which turns the blood green, said Dr. Alana Flexman of St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver.

Edwards Vows To Use Peace Corps In Fight Against Terrorism

Seriously, You can't make this up.

Senator Edwards is outlining a new national security strategy that hinges on the creation of a 10,000-person civilian peace corps to stem the tide of terrorism in weak and unstable countries.

I beginning to think these Dems are not even living on the same planet as the rest of us.

Today In History 632 AD: Founder Of Islam and Child Rapist Goes To Hell

History.com

In Medina, located in present-day Saudi Arabia, Muhammad, one of the most influential religious and political leaders in history, dies in the arms of Aishah, his third and favorite wife.

Born in Mecca of humble origins, Muhammad married a wealthy widow at 25 years old and lived the next 15 years as an unremarkable merchant. In 610, in a cave in Mount Hira north of Mecca, he had a vision in which he heard God, speaking through the angel Gabriel, command him to become the Arab prophet of the "true religion." Thus began a lifetime of religious revelations, which he and others collected as the Qur'an. These revelations provided the foundation for the Islamic religion. Muhammad regarded himself as the last prophet of the Judaic-Christian tradition, and he adopted the theology of these older religions while introducing new doctrines. His inspired teachings also brought unity to the Bedouin tribesmen of Arabia, an event that had sweeping consequences for the rest of the world.

Putin Ready To Share Radar Info With U.S.

Al-Reuters

HEILIGENDAMM, Germany (Reuters) - Russia is ready to share information from a radar station it controls in Azerbaijan with the U.S. military, President Vladimir Putin said on Friday.

"Qabala completely covers the whole region that worries the Americans," Putin told a news conference at the end of a G8 summit, referring to the radar station. "We are ready on-line and in real-time to hand over all information."

Putin proposed to President George W. Bush on Thursday that Washington use the Russian-controlled Qabala radar instead of deploying parts of a missile shield in central Europe meant to ward of the threat of attack from "rogue" states like Iran.

The offer appeared to catch U.S. officials off-guard and they have given no indications they will revise their plans to put parts of the shield in Poland and the Czech Republic.

Moscow sees the U.S. plans as a threat to their security and unacceptable encroachment on its former sphere of influence.

I think the key phrase in this article, and one that explains why the Russians are having fits over the planned missile defense shield is:

...unacceptable encroachment on its former sphere of influence.

I've said from the very beginning that is not about a missile defense shield, it's about European countries looking to partner with the United States for their needs.

Russia is reverting back to a communist state, and with a U.S. presence in it's neighboring countries, it will become difficult for them to spread their ideology.

Senate Kills Immigration Bill; For Now

FOXNews.com

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid hoped to scramble enough support to pass an immigration reform bill during a second test vote expected Thursday evening, vowing to try to get it through the Senate despite a morning vote that failed to reach the 60-vote threshold needed to end debate and get to final passage.

Republicans stuck together to block an end to debate, 33-63. They opposed the measure because it would have prevented Republican amendments from being offered.

"It’s certainly not my goal to not get this bill to passage, provided we have fair treatment on this side of the aisle," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said.

"If we can't do this then we ought to vote to dissolve the Congress and go home till a new Congress," said Sen. Trent Lott, R-Miss., who added that he's getting calls from constituents upset that Congress can't pass an immigration reform bill.

Reid said he too did not want to give up on compromise legislation. "This is a bill that we have pushed it down the road a long ways, and I hope we can finish it," he said on the Senate floor before the morning vote.

Some senators are holding out hope that they can save the bill after it barely survived a deal-breaking challenge in an overnight vote. The legislation would address the 12 million illegal immigrants currently living in the United States, temporary workers and border security.

This thing needs to be thrown in the garbage and a new one constructed. What is so hard about securing the border first? When the border is secured as best it can be, then they can debate what to do with the illegals here. It's not rocket science.

While they're arguing on which illegal can become a citizen, hundreds are running across a porous border.

Gen. Petraeus Points Out Progress in Iraq

CNN.com

A new approach by American-led forces in Iraq is producing "breathtaking" improvements in security in some areas, says Lt. Gen. David Petraeus, commander of U.S. forces in the country, but al Qaeda in Iraq remains well-entrenched in some Baghdad neighborhoods.

In an exclusive interview with CNN, Petraeus said the situation in Anbar, the restive Sunni province west of the Iraqi capital, has been "truly transformed in recent months, as the Anbaris and the tribes have decided to oppose al Qaeda and fight with the coalition forces against them."

"What's taken place in Anbar is almost breathtaking," he said. "In the last several months, tribes that turned a blind eye to what al Qaeda was doing in that province are now opposing al Qaeda very vigorously. And the level of violence in Anbar has plummeted; although there clearly is still work to be done.

I cannot believe that CNN would report this. I thought they would follow the "War is Lost", Harry Reid talking point.

Almost everyday I post "Good News From The War on Terror", it shows that the military is succeeding in Iraq. Very few outlets report it.

How The Media Would Report Normandy Today

The scary thing is...it's true. There's such a thing as too much freedom of the press. The media has been deciding whether we win or lose wars. I believe there needs to be a degree of censorship.

Justice Gone Wrong

It really is a tragic time in our country now. We have a completely useless moron, who contributes nothing to this planet, commit crimes and then be released from jail early because she can't handle it. She was jailed for probation violation. The original charge of DUI could have resulted in someone's death. I think people fail to see the seriousness of driving drunk. She was caught driving twice after losing her license.

Then we have a man in "Scooter" Libby who was guilty of nothing more than failing to remember the order of conversations he had over 2 years ago. He was sentenced to 30 months in prison and $250,000 fine. To top it off, his testimony was more sound that the prosecutors witnesses. He was not the person who "outed" Valerie Plame. That was Richard Armitage. The overzealous prosecutor knew it was Armitage before he started the investigation, but had to get someone in Bush administration.

***UPDATE 6/7/2007 12:04PM***

From Drudge:

Reverend Al Sharpton, President of National Action Network, and one of the country's formost leaders for civil rights, is blastin the justice system for what appears to be favoritism in the early release of Paris Hilton.

"Though I have nothing but empathy for Ms. Hilton whom I have met and appeared with on Saturday Night Live the night I hosted in 2003, this early release gives all of the appearances of economic and racial favoritism that is constantly cited by poor people and people of color. There are any number of cases of people who handle being incarcerated badly and even have health condition that are not released.

I have served several senctences for civil rights and civil disobedience actions and I even fasted which caused health concerns to prison authorities who paid for a doctor to come see me daily rather than release me. This act smacks of the double standards that many of us raise.

While I don't see the need to turn it into a racial issue, for the most part, Sharpton is right.

Iran Caught Shipping Weapons To Taliban

The Blotter

The coalition analysis says munitions recovered in two Iranian convoys, on April 11 and May 3, had "clear indications that they originated in Iran. Some were identical to Iranian supplied goods previously discovered in Iraq."

The April convoy was tracked from Iran into Helmand province and led a fierce firefight that destroyed one vehicle, according to the official analysis. A second vehicle was reportedly found to contain small arms ammunition, mortar rounds and more than 650 pounds of C4 demolition charges.

A second convoy of two vehicles was spotted on May 3 and led to the capture of five occupants and the seizure of RPG-7mm rockets and more than 1,000 pounds of C4, the analysis says.

Also among the munitions are components for the lethal EFPs, or explosive formed projectiles, the roadside bombs that U.S. officials say Iran has provided to Iraqi insurgents with deadly results.

That's OK though. We will continue to ignore Iran's declaration of war on the United States.

AL-QAEDA LEADER KILLED IN BAGHDAD

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Coalition Forces killed a terrorist leader and detained three other suspected terrorists during an operation in Baghdad June 5 to disrupt a bombing network in the city.

Intelligence reports indicated the targeted building in the raid was a residence known to be a safe house for the targeted individual.

As Coalition Forces were securing the targeted building, numerous suspected terrorists attempted to flee and were detained by ground forces.  One terrorist made continuous hostile attempts to evade the ground forces and refused to listen to instructions given by the interpreter with Coalition Forces.

Coalition Forces, responding in self-defense, engaged the terrorist, killing him. Three suspected terrorists were also detained during the raid.

Muhammad Mahmud 'Abd Kazim Husayn al-Mashadani, also known as Abu Abdullah, was the terrorist killed during the raid.  He was a known al-Qaeda emir in the Hay al-Jamah area of Baghdad and part of a deadly vehicle-borne improvised explosive device cell.  He was positively identified as Muhammad Mahmud 'Abd Kazim Husayn al-Mashadani by associates and individuals detained during the raid.

COALITION FORCES ATTACK VBIED NETWORK: 2 KILLED, 10 DETAINED

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Coalition Forces killed two terrorists and detained 10 suspected terrorists in raids targeting an al-Qaeda in Iraq vehicle-borne improvised explosive device network Wednesday morning.

Coalition Forces raided several locations in follow-on operations after a Tuesday raid that killed a senior leader in a Baghdad VBIED cell.

When Coalition Forces entered a building in Baghdad, two suspected terrorists ignored an interpreter's instructions to comply with Coalition Forces' orders.  The two men ran into the building and attempted to retrieve weapons visible inside.

Coalition Forces, reacting to the hostile threat, engaged the two men, killing them.  One other suspected terrorist was detained on the scene and three vehicles used to transport weapons and personnel for the VBIED cell were destroyed.

In five other raids in Baghdad, Coalition Forces detained six suspected terrorists associated with the VBIED network and destroyed two vehicles used to transport weapons and personnel for the cell.  A related raid south of Tarmiyah netted three suspects tied to the terrorist group.

Reports from suspected terrorists captured during the Coalition raids indicate there are IEDs in place around the city, which Coalition Forces are now identifying and neutralizing.

Intelligence reports also indicate that the VBIED cell is responsible for chlorine attacks, assassination attempts against Iraqi officials and other high-profile attacks in Baghdad.

SIX SUSPECTED TERRORISTS DETAINED, ONE TERRORIST KILLED

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Coalition Forces detained six suspected terrorists and killed one terrorist during operations targeting the al-Qaeda in Iraq network Wednesday throughout Iraq.

VBIED AND WEAPONS CACHES DESTROYED NEAR BALAD

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Coalition Forces killed two terrorists, detained 11 suspected terrorists and destroyed several explosive caches during an operation June 2-4 northeast of Balad.

During the two-day operation targeting al-Qaeda in Iraq activities in the area, Coalition Forces detained 11 suspected terrorists for their involvement with al-Qaeda, uncovered seven weapons caches and found a fully assembled vehicle-borne improvised explosive device.

As Coalition helicopters were dropping off the assault force to begin the operation, the helicopters began receiving small arms fire.  The assault force on the ground also began receiving small arms fire, and Coalition Forces, acting appropriately to eliminate the threat, called in an air strike to engage the enemy.  Two terrorists armed with AK-47s and grenades were killed.

Coalition Forces discovered the VBIED set back from the road and concealed with tall vegetation.  The truck was equipped with a bomb and trigger devices, and four 55-gallon barrels of chemicals were found next to the VBIED.  An explosives team destroyed the bomb on site, which temporarily set fire to the surrounding brush.  Local emergency crews quickly responded to the location, but the fire extinguished itself with no damage to dwellings or livestock.

Local Iraqis led Coalition Forces to seven separate weapons caches in the area.  One of the caches was concealed in a small, man-made cave and contained a rocket-propelled grenade launcher, RPG rounds, a light machine gun, anti-personnel rounds, various ammunition, four bayonets, military-style assault vests and black masks.  Another cache buried in a barrel contained small arms, a gas mask and chemical agent first aid kit, five assault vests and 1,000 rounds of ammunition.

Five of the caches contained military-style uniform components, including Iraqi Army uniforms, U.S. military-issue boots, camouflage clothing and black masks, as well as anti-aircraft artillery rounds, small arms and electronics.

Fred! On The Scooter Libby Sentencing

ABC Radio

The sentencing of Scooter Libby was the last in a series of acts that has resulted in a shocking injustice – one created by and enabled by federal officials. As I’ve been saying for many months, this is a “he said-she said” case about political infighting that would have never been brought in any other prosecutor’s office in America.

The CIA started the ball rolling by sending the Democratic partisan husband of one of its employees to Niger on a sensitive mission. Knowing an opportunity when he saw one, he returned and blasted the Bush Administration (the fact that he blatantly falsified a few important things along the way is another story). It should not have been a shock to CIA officials when people then asked, “Who is this guy and why was he sent to Niger?” The only mystery in Washington is why the CIA employee-wife’s name, Valerie Plame, took as long as it did to leak.

Nevertheless, the CIA demanded that the Department of Justice investigate the leak of her name (not surprisingly, the fact that the CIA was making such a request was leaked). This put pressure on the DOJ. The DOJ, in turn, promptly caved to the media and Congressional pressure to appoint a Special Counsel to investigate the Plame leak. However, there were two glaring problems for anyone with a sense of justice, or who may have gone to law school for one semester.

The Justice Department and the new Special Counsel knew that:

1.) The leaking of Valerie Plame’s name did not constitute a crime because she was not a “covered person” under the relative criminal statue and,

2.) They already knew the name of the leaker: State Department official Richard Armitage.

Yet small matters such as these do not matter much to Justice Department officials trying to cover their own fanny, or to a newly minted Special Prosecutor with a reputation to make and members of the media to satisfy.

Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald proceeded to make public statements and employ tactics that would have brought condemnation in any other setting. He moved heaven and earth for a year and a half in order to come up with some sort of “process” crime against a high-level Administration official -- so that he could try them in one of the most anti-Bush Administration places in America, Washington DC.

The best he could come up with was a man who was not well known to the public, but who was basically working two full-time jobs after 9/11 -- trying to prevent such a thing from happening again. The White House physician says that, “Mr. Libby worked himself to exhaustion day after day reviewing national intelligence estimates.” Of course, he had to make time for hours of testimony before Fitzgerald’s grand jury and Fitzgerald found inconsistencies. At trial, practically every government witness not only was inconsistent with other government witnesses, but was inconsistent with regard to their own prior testimony.

During his closing arguments, Fitzgerald did what has caused many a prosecutor to get a mistrial: He asked the jury to consider “facts” that had not been placed into evidence or proven in any way. It was so egregious it was even too much for the judge, who admonished him.

Mr. Libby was convicted of perjury and false statements. For sentencing, the federal probation office filed a statement that the applicable federal guidelines called for a sentence of from 15 to 21 months. He also identified several grounds for what is known in the law as a “downward departure” from that range. In this case, Mr. Libby had led an exemplary life, and had sacrificed in order to serve his country and will presumably lose his law license. In other words, under the law, the judge would have had ample reason for giving Mr. Libby less than 15 months, including probation.

Fitzgerald, seeing this probation report and reverting to form as someone without professional judgment or scruples when it comes to landing his prey, weighed in.  Throughout the trial, Fitzgerald insisted that Valerie Plame’s status was irrelevant and that the defense could not use her status in any way. But now that it came time for sentencing, Fitzgerald insisted that her status be considered, and that Mr. Libby be treated as if he’d violated the law he’d never even been charged with.

Proving once again that Fitzgerald can get away with practically anything in Washington, the judge apparently accepted Fitzgerald’s argument, contrary to all notions of basic fairness. The judge rejected his own probation office’s recommendation, not only doubling the 15-month minimum to 30 months, but also fining Mr. Libby $250,000 and giving him 400 hours of public service. Apparently, the judge is going to make Mr. Libby start serving his sentence in the near future, before he can get his appeal heard.

Unfortunately, this is an example of what Washington is all about these days. All too often the intersection of politics, law and the media results in a lack of responsibility by practitioners in all three areas. Having all this crashing down on the head of one man and his family, in a time when national security leaks are published regularly on the front pages of the newspapers without consequence, will justifiably add to the cynicism and outrage on the part of all observers.

For the preamble to our Constitution, our founders stated explicitly the purposes for our Constitution. Listed even before providing for domestic tranquility or for the common defense was the establishment of justice. Official behavior, with regard to matters like the Scooter Libby case, are not what our framers had in mind. Now this excessive sentence, given by the Federal District Judge is just another in a long line of reasons why Mr. Libby should be pardoned.

Muslim Extremists Forcibly Turn Catholic Church Into Mosque.

I hope they drown in pigs blood.

On the same day as Father Ragheed Ganni’s funeral, Muslim fundamentalists sent another message of hatred to Catholics, this time attacking two churches in Iraq. Fr. Ragheed, along with three deacons were killed just this past Sunday after they had finished celebrating Mass.

According to the AINA news agency, two churches were attacked in the Baghdad district of Dora.  At St. John the Baptist’s in Hay Al-Athoriyeen, several security guards who protect the church were killed, and St. Jacob’s in Hay al Asya was vandalized and forcibly turned into a mosque.  St. Jacob’s had previously been attacked in October of 2004.

The attacks coincided with the funeral Mass for Father Ganni which was being celebrated in Karamles by Archbishop Faraj Rahho of Mosul amidst tight security.  The minister of finance of the regional Kurdish government, Sarkis Aghajan, attended the service.

On June 7 in Rome Msgr. Philip Najim, procurator of the Patriarchate of Babylon of the Chaldeans, will celebrate a Mass in memoriam of Father Ganni and the three deacons who were killed with him.

Today In History: D-Day/The Battle Of Normandy

boortz.com

Sixty-three years ago on this day allied troops stormed the beaches of Normandy in what is still, to this day, the largest seaborne invasion in the history of the world. Just a little historical oddity, but the name for the overall operation to retake Western Europe from Hitler's Nazis was Operation Overlord. The name for the actual June 6th invasion of Normandy was Operation Neptune. Neptune began on June 6, 1944, and ended 24 days later on June 30th. The allied forces suffered about 10,000 causalities on D-Day. About 2500 of those casualties were deaths. The U.S. forces casualty figure was 6,603, inducing 1,465 dead, 3,184 wounded, 1928 missing and 26 captured.

There was a time when you didn't have to engage in a mini history lesson on D-Day. This was something the American people were actually taught in school, or something they remembered personally. Not so today, unfortunately. If you care to know more here are some links from the D-Day Museum and from Wikipedia that seem very thorough.

I don't think you can say enough about the men who stormed the beach. I wanted to put some old D-Day video here but some don't allow embedding. Here's the links:

As the Allies were landing on the beach, President FDR was saying a prayer on the radio. The prayer can be found here.
