I Must Be Crazy, I Could Swear I Read That A Court Ruled In Favor Of The People
Not only did the SCOTUS rule in favor of people having the right to keep and bear arms, but most of the media outlets appear to not realize that it was a given right stated in the Constitution. I keep seeing headlines such as, "Landmark", "Historic", blah, blah, blah. It was right there in the Constitution the whole time. It was those who wished to infringe on our freedoms that found this the most shocking.
This was a 5-4 ruling. That means that 4 of these judges voted AGAINST the Constitution that they were appointed to uphold and base rulings on. The judicial activism has to go.
It's not even that I care about the handguns. I don't own one, probably never will. I do, however, own shotguns for hunting. There's an old saying that applies to government, "give them an inch and they take a mile". It started with a "assault weapons" ban. Which only limited the amount of ammo a magazine could hold. There really isn't that much of a difference between a magazine that can hold 10 rounds and one that holds 15. So it was basically just a waste of time, money, and effort. Next they move to handguns, then they keep going all the way down to BB guns.
Criminals are criminals because they don't follow the law. They surely are not going to stop using guns to commit crimes because the government said so. However; they will be more hesitant to commit crimes against people when they're not sure if that person has a gun though.
Now, I'm not a NRA hardliner. Do I believe everyone should own a gun? No. I support background checks and detailed information on the firearm purchased. Also, no sportsman needs a fully automatic weapon. They shouldn't be outlawed, but if you want one, you should continue to apply for the permit through ATF.
I also believe the concealed carry laws should be universal and specific. Here in Ohio, you have to pass a background check and spend 12 hours shooting at a range supervised. You don't even have to hit the target, you just have to spend 12 hours shooting your gun. Call me paranoid, but I don't feel comfortable with a bunch of yahoo's who can't hit the broadside of a barn running around with guns. For example, if one of these people come into my store at the same time we're being robbed, I now have two people who probably can't hit anything firing off guns. The only thing worse than that is having the police show up and start shooting. They're the only people I know of that can empty a magazine at point-blank range, and miss.
More to my thoughts:
The Heller decision states that the government cannot restrict the ownership of a gun, but it doesn't prevent the government from restricting how many you can own. New gun bans will pop up limiting the caliber, only allowing one gun, and/or preventing the gun owner from taking it out of the home.
It's a small step though.
