Not only is this stupid in itself, but they were brothers-in-law. Its obvious they are not stable minded. Not because of the fight, but because they each support a Democrat.

Meet Jose Antonio Ortiz. The Pennsylvania man allegedly stabbed his brother-in-law in the stomach after the pair quarreled about their respective support of Democratic presidential candidates Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. According to cops, Ortiz, 28, stabbed Sean Shurelds last Thursday night in the kitchen of an Upper Providence Township home.

...the 41-year-old Shurelds, an Obama supporter, told Ortiz that the Illinois senator was "trashing" Clinton (apparently in regard to recent primary and caucus results). Ortiz, a Clinton supporter, replied that "Obama was not a realist." While not exactly fighting words, the verbal political tiff led to some mutual choking and punching. And, allegedly, a stabbing in the abdomen. Ortiz, pictured in the mug shot below, was charged with a felony aggravated assault count and two misdemeanors and jailed in lieu of $20,000 bail. Shurelds was flown to Hahnemann University Hospital, where he was admitted in critical condition.

Coalition forces target al-Qaeda networks; one terrorist killed, 20 suspects detained

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces killed one terrorist and detained 20 suspected terrorists Wednesday and today during operations to disrupt al-Qaeda operating in central and northern Iraq.

West of Taji this morning, Coalition forces conducted an operation targeting an individual believed to be an associate of the Baghdad improvised explosive device and car bombing networks. Intelligence indicates he is a terrorist facilitator of materials, vehicles and suicide bombers for multiple terrorist cells throughout the city. The targeted individual is also allegedly an associate of a military leader in Abu Ghraib. During the operation, Coalition forces engaged and killed one armed terrorist. The ground force also detained two suspects.

During an operation in Sharqat, Coalition forces captured an alleged associate of the senior leader for the al-Qaeda in Iraq network in Mosul. Reports indicate the suspect is also connected with several other senior leaders in northern Iraq. In addition to the wanted individual, the ground force detained five suspected terrorists.

In two operations in southeast Mosul today, Coalition forces detained six suspected terrorists while targeting the alleged senior leader for the network in Bayji and a suspected improvised explosive device cell leader for a network operating in the city.  

During an operation in Bayji, Coalition forces detained three suspected terrorists this morning while targeting the suspected leader of an insurgent network associated with al-Qaeda in Iraq that operates outside of the city.

Also, during an operation Wednesday north of Tal Afar, three suspects were detained while targeting an alleged associate of al-Qaeda in Iraq senior leadership.

 

Coalition forces target al-Qaeda in Iraq networks; six killed, six suspects detained

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces killed six terrorists and detained six suspected terrorists Thursday and today during operations to disrupt al-Qaeda operating in central and northern Iraq.

During an operation east of Khan Bani Sad today, Coalition forces targeted an alleged al-Qaeda in Iraq associate involved in the suicide bombing and improvised explosive device network that runs from Baqouba to Baghdad and north to Mosul. Reports indicate the suspect is associated with Abu Karrar, the AQI leader also involved in the suicide bombing network who was killed during a Coalition forces operation Feb. 17.

As the ground force arrived in the area, they were engaged by enemy fire from what appeared to be an underground bunker. Fixed-wing aircraft was called to engage the threat, killing three terrorists. An additional two enemy personnel outside the building were engaged by a supporting helicopter, and both were killed. As the ground force continued to clear the area, they called for the occupants of one of the target buildings to come out. One individual refused to comply and moved toward two weapons in the building. Perceiving hostile intent, Coalition forces engaged and killed the terrorist. The ground force also detained two suspected terrorists and destroyed a vehicle in the area that contained a weapons cache. 

Also today, Coalition forces detained one suspected terrorist during an operation in Baghdad, while targeting associates of an AQI network involved in the facilitation of materials, vehicles and suicide bombers to terrorist groups throughout Baghdad.

During an operation in Mosul Thursday, Coalition forces detained three suspected terrorists while targeting an alleged associate of a senior level foreign terrorist facilitator responsible for attacks against Iraqi and Coalition forces in the region.

 

Iraqi, Coalition security forces detain 27, discover 4 caches in recent operations in Mosul

MOSUL, Iraq – Iraqi Army and Coalition Forces detained 27 suspects and discovered four weapons caches in the Ninewa Province in recent joint operations.

During these operations joint forces also rescued a hostage from an underground prison. These operations are part of Multi-National Division – North’s continuing pursuit of criminals in the area.

 

Coalition forces targets weapons facilitation, car-bombing networks; 14 detained

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces detained 14 suspected terrorists Friday and today during operations to disrupt al-Qaeda operating in central Iraq.

West of Samarra Friday, Coalition forces captured an alleged al-Qaeda in Iraq cell leader involved in the al-Jazirah network. The suspect allegedly commands a group of 10 to 15 terrorists who conduct attacks in the area.  

Reports indicate the wanted individual’s two brothers are also associated with the al-Qaeda in Iraq network, one of whom was detained Feb. 12 for his involvement in weapons. The other brother is alleged to be an AQI executioner in the area. During the operation, the wanted individual identified himself to the ground force and was subsequently detained along with six other suspects.

During an operation in Tikrit today, Coalition forces detained two suspects to include an alleged AQI associate involved in weapons facilitation. The suspect is allegedly involved in the recent transfer of weapons from Bayji to Tikrit. Reports also indicate the suspect is connected to foreign terrorist safe houses and a large weapons cache found during a previous operation in the area.

Northwest of Tarmiyah today, Coalition forces captured another wanted individual who is believed to be involved in the Karkh AQI network. Reports indicate the suspect has been inactive for several months and recently resumed his role in an effort to rebuild the network after recent degradation by Coalition forces, including the capture of another senior Karkh network member Feb. 17. During the operation, the ground force detained two suspected terrorists in addition to the wanted individual.

Two additional suspects were detained in Baghdad today while targeting an associate of the AQI car-bombing network in the city.

 

Operation Red River nets 19 detainees in Sha’ab

BAGHDAD – Soldiers with Multi-National Division – Baghdad captured 19 suspected criminals during Operation Red River in Baghdad’s northeast Sha’ab neighborhood Feb. 21.

The operation consisted of a coordinated series of raids targeting a Special Group criminal cell operating in Sha’ab. The operation involving soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, raided multiple target houses. The operation lasted from shortly after midnight to just before sunrise.

The Special Group members targeted during the operation were identified by local residents, who resent the violence in their neighborhoods.

 

Coalition targets al-Qaeda networks operating in Mosul, 11 suspects detained

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces detained 11 suspected terrorists Friday and today during operations to disrupt al-Qaeda operating in Mosul.

During operations Friday in southeast Mosul, Coalition forces captured an alleged associate of several foreign al-Qaeda in Iraq leaders, who are believed to be responsible for recent attacks against the Coalition and Iraqi Security Forces in Mosul. In addition to the wanted individual, the ground force detained two suspected terrorists. Upon securing the area, Coalition forces discovered a weapons cache consisting of 20 mortar rounds, which was destroyed to prevent future use by terrorists.

On the west side of the city Friday, Coalition forces detained three suspected terrorists, including an alleged associate of numerous foreign al-Qaeda in Iraq leaders in Samarra. Reports indicate the suspect moved from Samarra to support terrorist operations in Mosul due to Coalition and Iraqi Security Force success in disrupting the AQI leadership presence in the region.

In Mosul today, five suspected terrorists were detained during an operation targeting an associate of a senior-level foreign terrorist facilitator and AQI leader in the region.

 

Coalition forces detain five suspected insurgents in Zabul

BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – Five suspected insurgents were detained Wednesday during a Coalition forces’ operation in Zabul province to disrupt insurgent networks in the area.

Coalition forces searched compounds in the Qalat district targeting an insurgent associated with Taliban and foreign-fighter facilitators conducting anti-government activities.

Coalition forces found and detained five people, including the targeted insurgent, with suspected ties to insurgent networks while conducting their search. The detainees will be questioned on their involvement in insurgent operations as well as other extremist activities.

 

Off-Duty ANP detain five IED emplacers

MATUN DISTRICT, Afghanistan – Five off-duty Afghan National Police officers detained five people who were emplacing an improvised explosive device Feb. 17 on a road east of Khowst City, Khowst Province. 

The officers, stationed at the Terezai District Center, were traveling in their own personal vehicles and civilian attire, when they noticed two men setting up the IED. The officers stopped their vehicles to question the suspects, who claimed they were placing the explosives to harm the Americans, rather than the ANP. Three other men, suspected of being lookouts, were detained as well. 

The five detainees were taken to the district center for additional questioning, when another officer recognized one of the detainees.  ANP went to the suspect’s family compound and detained six additional men for questioning. 

Demolition experts successfully cleared the IED and its’ materials, while Afghan police secured the area, making the roadway safe for commerce and travel.

According to data collected by Coalition forces’ IED route clearance units, Afghan National Security Forces, partnered with Coalition forces, are finding, interdicting or receiving turned-in IEDs more often than these explosives are detonating on vehicles and people.

For the second time in two years, an Argentine teenager has given birth to female triplets, BBC News reports.

The 16-year-old, who goes only by the name of Pamela, first gave birth to triplets at the age of 15.

Pamela, who lives in Leones in the central Argentine province of Cordoba, also gave birth to a son two years ago. All seven children were born prematurely, and the mother did not use fertility treatments, the report said. The chances of giving birth to triplets once are more than 8,000 to 1, according the report.

Provincial authorities donated land and built a house for Pamela’s family when the first set of triplets were born. Pamela’s mother plans to ask the government for more assistance.

Sinclair charges Obama smoked crack cocaine in the limo while Sinclair snorted powdered cocaine provided by the legislator. He says the two met in an upscale Chicago lounge before leaving in Sinclair's limousine where the drug use and sex took place for the first time.

Coalition targets al-Qaeda in Iraq networks, six suspects detained

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces detained six suspected terrorists today during operations to disrupt al-Qaeda operating in central and northern Iraq.

During an operation in Baghdad, Coalition forces captured an alleged associate of the senior al-Qaeda in Iraq leader responsible for providing operational direction to all of the networks in Baghdad, to include the cells responsible for suicide and car bombing attacks. The suspect reportedly facilitates transportation for senior terrorist leadership operating throughout the area. 

Southeast of Samarra, Coalition forces detained two suspected terrorists to include an alleged leader of the al-Qaeda in Iraq network in Jalam associated with kidnappings and the facilitation of money for terrorist operations. Reports indicate the suspect arranges meetings between senior level terrorist leaders from networks along the Tigris River Valley to discuss AQI operations. 

An additional two suspects were detained during an operation in Mosul while targeting an alleged senior leader for the AQI networks in northern Iraq.

 

UPDATE: Coalition forces positively identify terrorist killed in operation Sunday

BAGHDAD – A terrorist killed during an operation Sunday has been positively identified as Abu Karrar.

Karrar, also known as Arkan Khalaf Khudayyir, was a senior intelligence leader involved in the al-Qaeda in Iraq network in Baqouba. He was also a terrorist facilitator for the suicide bombing network in the Diyala River Valley region, which conducts attacks in Baghdad, to include attacks by female suicide bombers. Reports indicate the network has been disrupted by recent successful Coalition operations in the area.

Karrar was killed when Coalition forces conducted an operation near Khan Bani Sad Sunday afternoon. As Coalition forces arrived in the target area, they observed Karrar and another suspect fleeing their vehicle. Karrar brandished a weapon with the perceived intent to fire on Coalition forces. The assault force engaged, killing both men. Coalition forces discovered an AK-47 and ammunition in the vehicle, and they destroyed the vehicle to prevent further use for terrorist activity.

 

Coalition forces disrupt Taliban support networks in Zabul

BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – Seven suspected insurgents were detained Feb.17 during a joint Afghan and Coalition forces operation to disrupt Taliban support networks in Zabul Province.

The joint force searched compounds in Qalat District targeting an insurgent acting as a weapons, equipment and supply conduit for Taliban fighters.

While conducting their search, Afghan and Coalition forces found and detained seven individuals, including the targeted insurgent, with suspected links to insurgent networks. The detained individuals will be questioned on their involvement in Taliban operations as well as other illegal activities.

The targeted insurgent was wounded by small-arms fire when he presented a credible threat to Coalition forces. The suspected insurgent was taken to a medical facility for treatment.

 

11 suspected insurgents detained in Zabul Province

BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – Eleven suspected insurgents were detained Feb. 19 during a combined Afghan National Security and Coalition forces operation to disrupt Taliban leadership networks in Zabul Province.

The combined force searched compounds in the Dey Chopan District targeting a Taliban leader responsible for several attacks against Coalition forces. The individual also allegedly facilitated weapons and financial support to Taliban fighters.

The joint force employed accurate, aerial-delivered conventional munitions to suppress several suspected insurgents during the search. There were no indications of deaths or injuries as a result of the engagement.

Afghan and Coalition forces found and detained 11 individuals with suspected links to the targeted Taliban leader. The detained individuals will be questioned on their involvement in Taliban operations as well as other illegal activities.

 

ANSF secure remote villages in Helmand Province

BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan - The 1st Company of 201st Commando Kandak, Afghan National Army, accompanied by Coalition forces, detained 11 suspected insurgents, found 1,000 lbs of heroin, and destroyed a large weapons cache in Helmand Province Feb. 20.

The 201st Commandos conducted operations to establish security, disrupt insurgent activity and deny enemy sanctuary, north of the city of Musa Qaleh. 

ANSF cleared a compound of known Taliban members. While clearing the compound, the elite unit discovered the heroin and an opium processing lab.  The Taliban use the monetary proceeds from the sale of heroin to fund their insurgency.  

Coalition aircraft observed insurgents emplacing IED’s and establishing defensive positions.  Coalition aircraft moved in to investigate the suspected sites and were fired upon by enemy combatants.  The Coalition aircraft responded with precision fires and eliminated the enemy positions. The combined force also destroyed a large weapons cache.

The success of this mission confirms the resolve and ability of the ANSF to rid Afghanistan of insurgents.

Early in Senator John McCain’s first run for the White House eight years ago, waves of anxiety swept through his small circle of advisers.

A female lobbyist had been turning up with him at fund-raisers, visiting his offices and accompanying him on a client’s corporate jet. Convinced the relationship had become romantic, some of his top advisers intervened to protect the candidate from himself — instructing staff members to block the woman’s access, privately warning her away and repeatedly confronting him, several people involved in the campaign said on the condition of anonymity.

When news organizations reported that Mr. McCain had written letters to government regulators on behalf of the lobbyist’s client, the former campaign associates said, some aides feared for a time that attention would fall on her involvement.

John McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, was last night romantically linked to a 40-year-old female political lobbyist and accused of granting her clients political favours.

Mr McCain, 71, fiercely denied a report in the New York Times which stated that eight years ago, during his first run for the White House, his aides were so concerned about his relationship with Vicki Iseman that they blocked her access to him to "protect the candidate from himself".

Mr McCain and Ms Iseman both denied to the newspaper - which has been sitting on the story for several weeks - that they had ever had a romantic relationship. The story was first alluded to on the Drudge Report website just before the Iowa and New Hampshire nomination contests, but after frantic lobbying by Mr McCain and his aides at the time the New York Times did not publish it then.

Dead Spy Satellite Nailed With One Missile

I really hope there is some video of this soon. It's impressive that they could hit it on the first try. I guess our missile defense does work.

WASHINGTON —  A missile launched from a Navy ship successfully struck a dying U.S. spy satellite passing 130 miles over the Pacific on Wednesday, a defense official said. Full details were not immediately available.

It happened just after 10:30 p.m. EST.

Two officials said the missile was launched successfully. One official, who is close to the process, said it hit the target. He said details on the results were not immediately known.

The goal in this first-of-its-kind mission for the Navy was not just to hit the satellite but to obliterate a tank aboard the spacecraft carrying 1,000 pounds of a toxic fuel called hydrazine.

Coalition forces targets al-Qaeda networks in northern Iraq; one killed, 23 detained

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces killed one terrorist and detained 23 suspects Saturday and today during operations to disrupt al-Qaeda networks operating in northern Iraq.

Coalition forces conducted an operation in Sharqat today targeting an alleged founder of an anti-Coalition insurgent group tied to the leader of the al-Qaeda in Iraq network in Bayji. As Coalition forces called for the occupants of a target building to come out, one man ran out of the building and was directed to stop. He continued to maneuver towards the ground force’s position despite their continued commands to stop.  Due to increased threat of suicide attacks in the region, Coalition forces perceived hostile intent from the non-compliant man and engaged, killing him. Upon clearing the area, the ground force detained two suspected terrorists.

South of Kirkuk today, Coalition forces captured an alleged associate of the terrorist network in the city. The suspect is believed to be associated with the alleged former leader of the assassination cell in Hawijah who was detained Jan. 10, Abu Harith; the leader of the Kiruk al-Qaeda in Iraq network killed Nov. 21; and another suspected Kirkuk AQI leader, who was detained Feb. 9. Coalition forces detained four suspected terrorists in addition to the wanted individual.

Saturday in Mosul, Coalition forces captured an alleged AQI leader involved in the network on the east side of the city. Reports indicate the suspect is associated with several senior leaders in the area, to include a judge of a terrorist illegal court system, and the radical Taliban-like spiritual advisor for the AQI networks in the city. The ground force detained one suspect in addition to the wanted individual.

Also in Mosul Saturday afternoon, Coalition forces targeted an alleged foreign terrorist facilitator and associate of an AQI senior leader operating in Mosul. During the operation, Coalition forces detained nine suspected terrorists. In one of the target buildings, the ground force discovered what they assessed to be an improvised explosive device materials cache. Once the area was clear and secure, Coalition forces destroyed the explosive materials to prevent future use for terrorist attacks. 

During two operations in Mosul today, Coalition forces detained five suspected terrorists while targeting associates of foreign terrorist and weapons facilitators.

 

Coalition forces targets weapons facilitation networks; two killed, 12 detained

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces killed two terrorists and detained 12 suspects Saturday and today during operations to disrupt al-Qaeda networks operating in central Iraq.

In continued efforts to disrupt terrorist safe havens northeast of Samarra near the Hamrin Mountains, Coalition forces conducted an operation Saturday targeting an alleged al-Qaeda in Iraq leader for the network operating in the Albu Awad village. As they arrived at the target location, two men were observed fleeing the area and were directed to stop. Both men continued to maneuver in opposite directions and Coalition forces followed one, engaging and killing him. The other individual was found hiding with a pistol, ready to fire at the ground force. Perceiving hostile intent from the armed suspect, Coalition forces engaged, killing him. 

In Baghdad today, Coalition forces captured an alleged senior level car-bomb facilitator for al-Qaeda in Iraq networks throughout Baghdad and north to Tikrit. Reports indicate the suspected terrorist was a former leader for the AQI network in Karkh, and was involved in the abduction of an Iraqi intelligence officer last spring. The suspect is believed to be a direct associate of AQI senior leaders throughout Baghdad and the surrounding terrorist networks. In addition to the wanted individual, Coalition forces detained one suspect on site without incident.

In the western region of the city, Coalition forces detained three suspected terrorists to include an alleged weapons facilitator who specializes in transporting improvised explosive device and car-bomb supplies in northern Iraq. Reports indicate the individual is associated with another suspected car-bomb facilitator, who was detained by Coalition forces Feb. 15.

An additional seven suspects were detained during operations in Baqouba and southwest of Samarra targeting associates of the AQI suicide network operating in the region, and an associate of the AQI leader for the Jazirah area.

 

Iraqi Special Operations Forces, U.S. Special Forces detain suspected terrorist leader in Mosul

BALAD, Iraq – Iraqi Special Operations Forces, advised by U.S. Special Forces, detained a suspected terrorist leader during an operation in Mosul Feb. 17.

According to intelligence reports, the suspect is responsible for improvised-explosive device attacks against Iraqi security forces in Mosul. The suspect is also believed to be responsible for distributing insurgent propaganda in the city.

BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – Four suspected insurgents were detained Saturday during a Coalition forces operation to disrupt Taliban leadership networks in Zabul Province.

Coalition forces performed a search of compounds in Qalat District targeting a Taliban leader responsible for conducting anti-government operations in the area.

While conducting their search, Coalition forces found and detained four individuals with suspected links to insurgent networks including one identified as a mid-level Taliban leader. The detained individuals will be questioned on their involvement in Taliban operations as well as other illegal activities.

 

ANSF, Coalition forces recover weapons caches in Nangarhar

BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – Recently, Afghans provided information leading to the recovery of a suspected insurgent weapons cache in Zawa Village of Khogyani District, Nangarhar Province, near the Pakistan Border.

The cache, recovered Jan. 16, consisted of 93 recoilless-rifle rounds. Insurgents frequently use these weapons to attack Afghan National Security Forces or Coalition forces, or terrorize Afghan citizens throughout the province.According to a Coalition soldier, the weapons found were in good condition.

After nearly 50 years in power, Castro has resigned as "president". He will still be head of the Cuban Communist Party and a member of parliament.

An ailing, 81-year-old Fidel Castro resigned as Cuba's president Tuesday after nearly a half-century in power, saying he will not accept a new term when parliament meets Sunday.

The end of Castro's rule — the longest in the world for a head of government — frees his 76-year-old brother Raul to implement reforms he has hinted at since taking over as acting president when Fidel Castro fell ill in July 2006. President Bush said he hopes the resignation signals the beginning of a democratic transition.

"My wishes have always been to discharge my duties to my last breath," Castro wrote in a letter published Tuesday in the online edition of the Communist Party daily Granma. But, he wrote, "it would be a betrayal to my conscience to accept a responsibility requiring more mobility and dedication than I am physically able to offer."

In the pre-dawn hours, most Cubans were unaware of Castro's message, and Havana's streets were quiet. It wasn't until 5 a.m., several hours after Castro's message was posted on the internet, that official radio began reading the missive to early risers.

By sunrise, most people headed to work in Havana seemed to have heard the news, which they appeared to accept without obvious signs of emotion. There were no tears or smiles as Cubans went about their usual business.

In a letter of condolence following last week's assassination of Hizbullah terror chief Imad Mughniyeh, Jafari said: "I am convinced that with every passing day Hizbullah's might is increasing and in the near future, we will witness the disappearance of this cancerous growth Israel by means of the Hizbullah fighters' radiation [therapy]."

In the letter, in which Jafari consoled Nasrallah over the death of the "martyr," he continued: "There's no doubt that the death of this loyal fighter will strengthen the resolve of all revolutionary Muslims and fighters in the struggle against the Zionist regime, particularly the resolve of those who fought by this martyr's side."

Mughniyeh was considered to be closely affiliated to the Revolutionary Guards and the al-Quds Brigades. Together, the two organizations trained Hizbullah fighters in Lebanon and Iran and planned terror attacks the world over.

As the Israel Foreign Ministry protests to the UN repeated statements by Iran to "wipe Israel off the map" security analysts in Israel say that the Jewish democratic nation is more than ready for any aggression by Iran, Hezbollah and Syria.

"Israel was born from the ashes of the Holocaust," said an Israel security analyst. "As such, Israel, the Jewish people and every democratic nation would not allow a second Holocaust to take place. Israel is more than prepared to meet any challenge by the new racist Nazi regime in Iran. We know every step they take, we know the color of the underwear that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Hassan Nasrallah wear. If they think that the US can shoot down a satellite with laser pin point accuracy, they have not seen the weapons that Israel would and could use to defend herself - and I am not talking about nuclear or biological."

Weapon cache found in Diddum region

BAGHDAD – Coalition Forces found a large weapon cache in two separate holes approximately 30 meters apart in Diddum, Iraq, Feb. 11.

The cache contained approximately 1,000 pounds of unknown bulk explosives, barrels of ordnance containing 60 mm, 82 mm and 120 mm rounds, 107 mm rockets, OG-7, PG-7, OG-9, various fuses and mortar rounds.

In addition, approximately 1,500 pounds of unknown bulk explosives in white bags were found about 20 meters away.

Soldiers from 3-7th Inf. Regt. were able to find the cache through intelligence given from concerned residents in the area.

 

Paratroopers capture key Special Groups leader in Sha’ab 2nd BCT, 82nd Abn. Div.

BAGHDAD – Multi-National Division – Baghdad Soldiers captured a key leader of a Special Groups criminal network in Baghdad’s Sha’ab neighborhood Feb. 15.

Acting on multiple-source reporting, paratroopers with 2nd Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division detained the suspect during an operation just before noon.

Maj. Cameron Weathers, intelligence officer for the 2nd BCT, said that within the last month alone, the suspect allegedly played a leading role in planning and executing the kidnappings of four Iraqi National Police officers Feb. 2, and the kidnapping of three Sons of Iraq security force members Feb. 7.

The suspect is also believed to have masterminded the November bombing of a Coalition outpost and the 2006 murder of an Iraqi Police colonel, as well as numerous killings of innocent Iraqi civilians.

Weathers said the suspect has recently been engaged in weapons smuggling. He is suspected of being involved in a long list of additional crimes, including murders, kidnappings and IED attacks.

 

Iraqi Security Forces, U.S. Special Forces Detain Seven Suspected Terrorists

BAGHDAD – Iraqi Security Forces, with U.S. Special Forces advising, detained seven suspected terrorists during an operation targeting insurgent groups affiliated with al-Qaeda in Iraq Feb. 13.

According to intelligence reports, the suspects are believed to be responsible for multiple improvised-explosive device attacks against Iraqi and Coalition Forces. 

The operation was undertaken after a former insurgent provided information about terrorist groups operating in the area. 

 

Joint IA and IP operation nets 21 suspects detained by Mosul ISF

MOSUL, Iraq – The Iraqi Army conducted an operation based on intelligence received from Iraqi Police resulting in the detention of 21 suspects in Mosul, Feb. 13.

 

Iraqi Army, Rakkasans find second large cache in two weeks

BAGHDAD – Iraqi Army Soldiers and Rakkasans unearthed a large cache in Qarghuli Feb.12.

Soldiers from Company D, 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) and their 3rd Battalion, 4th Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division counterparts, discovered the second large cache in the area in less than two weeks. 

The cache contained more than 825 pounds of homemade explosives, several rocket fuselages, 120 mm rounds, 720 shotgun shells and a variety of other munitions. 

Information provided by an Iraqi citizen led to the discovery; the same man provided information leading to massive weapon cache finds Jan. 30 in Qarghuli and Shubayshen.

Qarghuli Village, settled along the banks of the Euphrates River, has been relatively quiet since the Sons of Iraq started manning checkpoints in the area.  Soldiers from Company D and the 3/4/6 IA are living among the population, getting to know the community.

 

National Police, Coalition Forces find caches

BAGHDAD – National police from the 2nd Brigade, 1st National Police Division along with Multi-National Division – Baghdad Soldiers discovered two caches Feb. 15 during a joint mission in Boob al Sham, north of Baghdad.

The joint patrol discovered the initial cache of rocket-propelled grenades, ballistic vests, mortar rounds, hand grenades, small arms ammunition and plastic explosives. They requested explosive ordnance disposal assistance.

While waiting for the team to arrive, the National Police and members of Company D, 1st Combined Arms Battalion, 68th Armor Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, continued searching the area and discovered a second cache.

This find consisted of one rocket and 15 mortar rounds.

In total, they discovered 12 RPG launchers; three white phosphorus mortars; 16, 82mm mortars; six blasting caps; one improvised blasting cap; 13 hand grenades; 10, 120mm mortar propellant bags; 1,000 rounds of small arms ammunition; one 81mm mortar and one 107 rocket.

The 81mm rocket was destroyed on site and all other materials were transported to Camp Taji for processing.
