Coalition disrupts al-Qaeda in Iraq operating in Diyala, 15 terrorists killed

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces killed 15 terrorists Tuesday and today during operations targeting al-Qaeda networks north of Baqubah. During an operation Tuesday, Coalition forces conducted an operation targeting an alleged leader for the al-Qaeda in Iraq network operating in the Diyala province.  The targeted individual is believed to be an improvised explosive device specialist involved in coordinating IED and suicide-vest attacks in the region. Reports also indicate the targeted individual has ties to several al-Qaeda in Iraq senior leaders. As Coalition forces arrived in the target area, they observed several individuals reach for their weapons. Coalition forces fired warning shots in an attempt to get the men to cease their actions, but they did not comply.  Perceiving hostile intent from the armed men, Coalition forces engaged, killing two terrorists, to include the wanted individual. Upon clearing the area, the ground force discovered improvised explosive devices and grenades, which were safely destroyed, along with a vehicle in the target area. Coalition forces returned to the region this morning, targeting another alleged leader of the Diyala network associated with the terrorist killed during operations the previous day. As Coalition forces arrived in the target area they observed a group of enemy personnel moving into fighting positions. Responding in self-defense, the ground force called supporting aircraft to engage the hostile force, killing 10 terrorists. Coalition forces continued to clear the area and called for the occupants of the target building to come out, but they did not comply. Several terrorists were then observed maneuvering toward Coalition forces and they engaged the perceived hostile threat, killing three terrorists. As Coalition forces secured the building, they discovered a cache of weapons to include machine guns, military style assault vests, rocket propelled grenade propellant and various ammunition. Nearby, the ground force discovered additional weapons caches to include rocket propelled grenades, artillery and mortar rounds, improvised IEDs, and suicide-vest materials. All of the weapons were safely destroyed on site.

 

Coalition targets al-Qaeda in Iraq networks; five killed, 16 detained

BAGHDAD, Iraq – forces killed five terrorists and detained 16 suspects Tuesday and today during operations targeting al-Qaeda networks in central and northern Iraq. Coalition forces conducted an operation east of Samarra near the Hamrin Mountains Tuesday targeting an alleged al-Qaeda in Iraq member involved in terrorist media and propaganda operations. The targeted individual is reportedly associated with numerous al-Qaeda in Iraq senior leaders, as well as a suspect detained Monday for his involvement in the terrorist networks in Tarmiyah and Baghdad (see MNF-I press release A080121a, “Coalition significantly disrupts al-Qaeda networks: two killed; 18 detained,” dated Jan. 21, 2008). During the operation, Coalition forces confirmed the presence of several armed men maneuvering in the target area and fired multiple warning shots in an attempt to get the men to stop their movement. They men did not comply, and Coalition forces engaged, killing five terrorists. Nearby in Samarra Tuesday night and early this morning, Coalition forces captured a wanted individual believed to be involved in foreign terrorist facilitation networks in the region. Reports indicate the suspected terrorist is associated with the al-Qaeda in Iraq senior leader for the network in Samarra, as well as another suspect detained Jan. 18 for his role in the facilitation network, to include using his residence as a safe haven for al-Qaeda in Iraq members and foreign terrorists. During operations this morning, Coalition forces detained 13 suspected terrorists during two coordinated operations in Mosul targeting associates of al-Qaeda in Iraq senior leadership, and an additional two suspects in Baghdad while targeting a terrorist involved in improvised explosive device attacks.

 

Iraqi Security Forces, U.S. Special Forces detain suspected terrorists in separate raids (Balad)

BALAD, Iraq – Iraqi Security Forces, advised by U.S. Special Forces, detained a suspected terrorist leader, a suspected terrorist facilitator, and three other suspects in raids Jan. 20 and Jan. 22 in Balad and Hawija. The suspected leader of an al Qaeda in Iraq affiliated terror cell operating in Albu Krawan and Shihab Village was detained during a raid in Balad during a Jan. 22 raid. The suspected terrorist and his cell are believed to be responsible for mortar and improvised explosive device attacks against Coalition Forces as well as the kidnapping of innocent Iraqi civilians. In addition, he is believed to have provided safe houses, weapons and financing for terrorist operations in the region. A suspected terrorist facilitator and three others suspects were detained during a raid in the vicinity of Hawija, in the Kirkuk province, Jan. 20. According to intelligence reports, the four suspects are members of an Al Qaeda in Iraq cell that facilitates terrorist attacks. The suspects are believed to provide medical care, financing and safe havens for terrorists who carry out attacks against Iraqi and Coalition Forces.

 

ANSF operation nets nine in Musa Qaleh

BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – Afghan National Security Forces disrupted Taliban command and control networks in Helmand Province Jan. 22 killing one insurgent and detaining nine others with the aid of Coalition forces. The combined force conducted a search of several compounds in the Musa Qaleh District  targeting a Taliban commander reportedly having ties to foreign fighters and drug trafficking networks. The combined force was met with small-arms fire from an insurgent barricaded in a building in one of the compounds during the course of the operation.  The combined force returned small-arms fire killing the insurgent. ANSF and Coalition forces detained nine individuals while performing a search of the area. The detainees will be questioned as to their involvement in extremist activities.

Duncan Hunter Endorses Mike Huckabee?!

I haven't seen anything official yet. I get email updates from Hunter's campaign and haven't received one with an endorsement, so my head hasn't exploded yet. If it is official, I'm staying home election day.

If he did endorse Huckabee, it's quite perplexing on why he would. Huckabee will be out of the race within the next month, he's broke, so I cannot see any reasoning (VP, cabinet position) to endorse him. Huckabee has only a few Conservative values. Maybe Hunter thought Huckabee was better than the remaining candidates? I would have to disagree. I'm not endorsing anyone here, but if someone held a gun to my head and forced me to vote, it would be for Romney. I just threw up in my mouth with that statement, but such is the state of the Republican party.

I suppose the endorsement could be just because Huckabee was a nice guy, which I don't doubt. It's his policies I disagree with.

It looks more and more like a Romney/McCain or McCain/Romney ticket. I'm sure they could beat the Democrat nominee, but at what cost to Conservatives?

I'm thinking Conservatives should break away and form a new political party. I'm tired of holding my nose and voting for the lesser of two evils. I want to vote for a candidate that reflects my beliefs. I've looked into the Constitution party, they have most of my political ideology, but I disagree with their abortion stance. They feel all abortion should be illegal. I think the exceptions should be rape and incest.

The Conservative Party of America sounds good. The logo would be a muscle bound elephant holding a severed donkey head. Yeah, that's it.

Coalition forces capture Special Groups leader, criminal network facilitator; detain total of four suspects

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces captured a suspected Special Groups leader, a criminal network facilitator and detained two other suspects early this morning during operations in the Qasirin area, north of Baghdad. The initial targeted individual was reportedly a criminal network facilitator who gathered intelligence against Coalition and Iraqi forces and provided financial support to Special Groups members throughout the Diyala province. He allegedly specialized in electronics and surveillance capabilities to support criminal activity. The wanted individual was also reported to be an associate of several other senior-level criminal element leaders involved in attacks on Coalition forces. Intelligence led ground forces to the target location, where they captured the wanted individual and detained one other suspected criminal without incident. Coalition forces also discovered large amounts of American, Iraqi and Iranian currency. In a separate operation, a second targeted individual, also in the Qasirin area, was a suspected Special Groups leader who specialized in the use of improvised explosive devices in attacks on Coalition and Iraqi forces. He was also allegedly an associate of several other senior-level criminal element leaders involved in attacks on Coalition forces. Intelligence led ground forces to the target area, where they captured the wanted individual and detained one other suspected criminal, also without incident.

 

Coalition forces target al-Qaeda in Iraq networks, 19 suspected terrorists detained

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces detained 19 suspected terrorists Monday and today during operations targeting al-Qaeda networks in central and northern Iraq. During an operation north of Taji Monday, Coalition forces captured a suspected terrorist believed to be a key member of the al-Qaeda in Iraq network operating in Baghdad. He is allegedly a direct subordinate of the network’s senior leader and previously served in Tarmiyah, north of Baghdad. The suspected terrorist was involved in attacks against Coalition forces, beheadings, sniper and improvised explosive device attacks, and foreign terrorist facilitation. During the operation an additional four suspected terrorists were detained. During another operation targeting associates of the network north of Baghdad, Coalition forces detained three suspects in the capital city this morning while targeting a terrorist involved with kidnapping operations.  During operations in Baqubah, east of Samarra and in Mosul today, Coalition forces detained 11 suspected terrorists while targeting al-Qaeda in Iraq associates involved in improvised explosive device attacks and foreign terrorist facilitation.

 

Seven suspected insurgents detained in Zabul Province

BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan - Coalition forces detained seven suspected insurgents during an operation Monday to degrade Taliban networks in Zabul Province. Coalition forces performed a search of several compounds in the Qalat district, targeting insurgents with ties to Taliban and foreign fighter facilitators. During the course of the operation, Coalition forces found and detained seven individuals, including one who identified himself as a Taliban insurgent. The detained individuals will be questioned on their involvement in facilitation operations as well as other extremist activities. Coalition forces also recovered two weapons from one of the compounds which were removed to prevent further use by extremist forces.

 

ANSF, Coalition forces stop insurgent attacks in Helmand Province

BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – Afghan National Security Forces, advised by Coalition forces conducting security patrols in Helmand Province stopped two potential insurgent attacks Jan. 20. Near the village of Tambah in Narh-e Saraj District, a suspected insurgent was seen placing an improvised explosive device on a frequently-traveled roadway near the Helmand River.  After observing the illegal activity and ensuring no civilians were in the immediate area, Afghan National Army soldiers called in Coalition aircraft to drop precision-guided munitions on the IED location.  The secondary explosion, caused by the explosive material in the IED, confirmed the weapon’s destruction, making the roadway safe for civilians traveling in the area. Just a few kilometers north of Tambah, near the village of Qadar Kalay, also in Narh-e Saraj District, credible intelligence indicated that a group of insurgent spotters occupying an enemy observation post were coordinating further attacks against ANSF and Coalition soldiers.  Afghan National Army soldiers responded by calling in Coalition aircraft to eliminate the insurgent location. Tambah is a known center for insurgent activity.  During a security patrol through the village, the combined force found several 105mm and 82mm shell casings, IED-making materials, and a cache of drugs.

"Republican" Presidential Field Narrows, Fred! Drops Out

This wasn't entirely a surprise. Looks like Giuliani and Huckabee will be the next candidates to withdraw. That would leave Romney, McCain, & Paul. Hooray for Conservatives. UGH!

Former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson quit the Republican presidential race on Tuesday, after a string of poor finishes in early primary and caucus states. "Today, I have withdrawn my candidacy for president of the United States. I hope that my country and my party have benefited from our having made this effort," Thompson said in a statement. Thompson's fate was sealed last Saturday in the South Carolina primary, when he finished third in a state that he had said he needed to win. In the statement, Thompson did not say whether he would endorse any of his former rivals. He was one of a handful of members of Congress who supported Arizona Sen. John McCain in 2000 in his unsuccessful race against George W. Bush for the party nomination.

Al-Qaeda Hobo, Jose Padilla Sentenced To 17 Years

The dirty bomber gets 17 years. The interesting part is, prosecutors wanted life in prison, but the judge decided on 17 years because of "harsh conditions" at the Navy brig. I doubt he was faced with the fear of being butt-raped in the Navy brig. That in itself should disqualify him for a shortened sentence.

Jose Padilla, once accused of plotting with al-Qaida to blow up a radioactive "dirty bomb," was sentenced Tuesday to 17 years and four months on terrorism conspiracy charges that don't mention those initial allegations. The sentence imposed by U.S. District Judge Marcia Cooke marks another step in the extraordinary personal and legal odyssey for the 37-year-old Muslim convert, a U.S. citizen who was held for 3 1/2 years as an enemy combatant after his 2002 arrest amid the "dirty bomb" allegations. Prosecutors had sought life in prison, but Cook said she arrived at the 17-year sentence after taking into consideration the "harsh conditions" during Padilla's lengthy military detention at a Navy brig in South Carolina. "I do find that the conditions were so harsh for Mr. Padilla ... they warrant consideration in the sentencing in this case," the judge said. Cooke also imposed prison terms on two other men of Middle Eastern origin who were convicted of conspiracy and material support charges along with Padilla in August. The three were part of a North American support cell for al-Qaida and other Islamic extremists around the world, prosecutors said.

Coalition significantly disrupts al-Qaeda networks: two killed; 18 detained

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces killed two terrorists and detained 18 suspects Monday during operations targeting al-Qaeda networks in central and northern Iraq. Intelligence reports led Coalition forces west of Muqdadiyah to an alleged al-Qaeda in Iraq meeting location and weapons cache.  The target area was assessed to be associated with the individuals recently killed during an operation Jan. 18 for their involvement in the terrorist network in the northeast Diyala River Valley region.  As the ground force called for the occupants of the target building to come out, two armed terrorists maneuvered toward them.  Perceiving hostile intent from the armed men, Coalition forces engaged, killing the two terrorists.  As the ground force cleared the area, they discovered a weapons cache which they safely destroyed, along with a building assessed to be used for terrorist activity.  The ground force also detained three suspected terrorists during the course of operations. North of Tarmiyah, Coalition forces captured two wanted individuals who are allegedly brothers and associated with the al-Qaeda in Iraq network operating north of Baghdad.  The network is reportedly involved in attacks against Coalition forces, beheadings, sniper and improvised explosive device attacks and foreign terrorist facilitation.  One of the suspects is believed to be a leader in the network and involved in enforcing Sharia law. The other suspect is reportedly associated with several senior terrorists in the city, as well as the al-Qaeda in Iraq leader for Baghdad.  The ground force detained four suspected terrorists in addition to the targeted suspects. During an operation in Tikrit, Coalition forces captured an alleged weapons facilitator for the terrorist network operating in the city.  The suspect is believed to be a close associate of the al-Qaeda in Iraq leader of the network and associated with the facilitation of foreign fighters in the region.  In addition to the wanted individual, the ground force detained one suspected terrorist. In Sharqat, Coalition forces captured an alleged al-Qaeda in Iraq associate reportedly planning a large-scale operation against Coalition, Iraqi and Awakening forces in the Bayji area. The wanted individual allegedly relocated to Sharqat from Bayji in an attempt to avoid capture by Iraqi and Coalition forces.  Three additional suspected terrorists were detained during the operation. Farther north in Mosul, Coalition forces detained two suspected terrorists including a wanted individual allegedly involved in the al-Qaeda in Iraq network in the city.  The suspect reportedly served as an assassination officer for a former al-Qaeda in Iraq leader in the city who was killed during an operation Dec. 25. Also, during an operation east of Samarra one suspected terrorist was detained while targeting al-Qaeda in Iraq members associated with safe houses and meeting locations in the region.

 

Iraqi and U.S. Forces target extremist networks in Baghdad, killing extremist commander

BALAD, Iraq – An extremist brigade commander was killed Jan 21 in the Aamel neighborhood of Baghdad during an Iraqi Special Operations Forces operation to disrupt extremist networks operating in Baghdad. ISOF, with U.S. Special Forces advisers, conducted the operation to detain a reported extremist commander who controlled the violent and criminal activities of ten extremist groups operating within Baghdad. The extremist leader and his criminal operation are implicated in attacks, murder, kidnappings and criminal activity against Iraqi Security Forces and Iraqi civilians. Credible intelligence indicates he and his group are responsible for the sectarian murder of several hundred Iraqi civilians in the past year. The extremist is reported to have established a special extremist group that collects information which is used to target Iraqi Security Forces personnel for attack. Upon entering the building where the extremist was located, a man ran from the assault force into another room. The assault force forced the door to the room open and entered to detain the man. In the course of his capture, the man was killed after he attempted to grab a weapon. The man was later identified as the wanted extremist commander.

 

Phantom Phoenix: More than 10 targets destroyed during ongoing air strikes in Arab Jabour

BAGHDAD – More than 10 targets were hit during an ongoing night air raid against suspected al-Qaeda in Iraq safe havens in Arab Jabour Jan. 20. The joint operation involved precision air strikes by F-18 fighter jets and B-1 bombers, including Air Force, Navy and Marine aircraft. The Air Force and Soldiers of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division worked in coordination to prevent collateral damage, and to prevent use of any area for attacks on Coalition Forces. The raid follows the Jan. 10 and Jan. 16 air strikes in the same region which hit a combined total of 64 targets with a total weight of more than 80,000 pounds of bombs. The raid supported Operation Phantom Phoenix, the overarching operation that includes Operation Marne Thunderbolt, and is aimed at pursuing and defeating extremist elements throughout the country.

BALAD, Iraq – Iraqi Security Forces, advised by U.S. Special Operations Forces, detained five terror suspects and destroyed a suspected terrorist safe house in separate operations in Iraq Jan. 18 and 19. Near the city of Taji, Iraqi and U.S. Special Forces detained two members of a terrorist cell specializing in suicide bombing attacks during a Jan. 19 raid. The suspects are believed to be responsible for coordinating and providing supplies for several attacks against Iraqi and Coalition Forces. In a separate operation Jan. 18 in the town of Rutbah, an Iraqi Special Weapons and Tactics Team, advised by U.S. Special Operations Forces, detained three members of an al Qaeda in Iraq terrorist cell.  According to intelligence reports, the suspected terrorists are responsible for coordinating attacks against Iraqi and Coalition Forces as well as the kidnapping and murder of Iraqi citizens. The suspects are also believed to be involved in providing weapons and funding for terrorist attacks. In another Jan. 18 operation, Iraqi and Coalition Forces destroyed two empty structures used by terrorists in Diyala province. One of the buildings was believed to be a terrorist safe house and the other was a small storage facility.  They were destroyed after it was discovered that the structures had been rigged with explosives.

Bill Clinton showed yesterday why he made it into the book "The Art of Napping." During an appearance at the Convent Avenue Baptist Church in Harlem, the former president was caught nodding off. Clinton was there during a service to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., while his wife was nearby at Abyssinian Baptist Church, where she was endorsed by its minister, Rev. Calvin Butts. Clinton has had napping episodes before. Among others, he nodded off at a Mets game and at Ronald Reagan's funeral.

Iran Cowers In Fear Of New U.N. Resolution

Ha! Yeah right. But anyways, it seems that a new resolution containing sanctions for Iran is in the works. I'm sure it will be just as effective as the other ones.

World power foreign ministers should agree on a new draft sanctions resolution against Iran at a meeting in Germany on January 22, a French diplomatic source said on Monday. "The ministers should reach agreement tomorrow on a draft resolution to send to New York," the source said, declining to be named. "We are really very close to an agreement." Foreign ministers from the United States, Britain, France, China, Russia and Germany are scheduled to meet in Berlin on Tuesday to discuss a possible third U.N. sanctions resolution against Iran for refusing to halt sensitive nuclear work.

Iraqi Security Forces detain ten in separate operations

BAGHDAD – Iraqi Special Operations Forces, advised by U.S. Special Forces, detained an improvised explosive device cell leader and six other suspects in Mosul Jan. 15. The suspects are believed to be responsible for numerous improvised explosive device attacks against Iraqi and Coalition Forces in Mosul. In a separate operation, an Iraqi Emergency Response Unit with U.S. Special Forces as advisors, detained three members of an al-Qaeda in Iraq terrorist cell during a Jan. 16 raid in Baghdad. The suspected terrorists are believed to be responsible for purchasing weapons and improvised explosive device materials for attacks against Iraqi and Coalition Forces.

 

MND-B Soldiers find cache, arrest suspected extremist

BAGHDAD – Multi-National Division – Baghdad Soldiers found a cache and arrested a suspected extremist during ongoing security operations in the Rashid District of the Iraqi capital Jan. 16. Just after 4 p.m. local time, “Warriors” of Company D, 2nd Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division, attached to Task Force Dragon, found a munitions cache in the Doura neighborhood. Explosive Ordnance Disposal personnel destroyed an 80 mm white phosphorus mortar round, a 57 mm rocket, 150 pounds of homemade explosives, 43 improvised hand grenades, and a 57 mm homemade rocket launcher attached to two cell phones and a 60 mm mortar at a Coalition Forces base. Additionally, numerous tips led “Raiders” of Bandit Troop, 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Inf. Div., to an alleged extremist believed to be involved in various murders, intimidation of locals and placing an improvised explosive device.

 

MND-B Forces seize enemy rockets

BAGHDAD – Multi-National Division - Baghdad Soldiers, acting on a tip from a local national, seized a cache of rockets during a combat patrol in the western Rashid District of the Iraqi capital Jan. 10 “Black Lions,” of Company B, 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Inf. Div., raided a house and found 10 107mm rockets. The northwestern part of the district has historically been the origin of indirect fire on the International Zone and other Coalition Forces bases in the southern part of the city. The rockets were taken to a Coalition Forces base for disposal. Soldiers of 2nd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division, attached to TF Dragon, detained two suspected insurgents in Rashid Jan. 10. One of the suspected insurgents is believed to be a known extremist in Hadar.

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces detained 16 suspected terrorists Friday and today during operations targeting al-Qaeda networks in central and northern Iraq. In Salman Pak this morning, Coalition forces captured an alleged al-Qaeda in Iraq member involved in attacks against Concerned Local Citizens groups in the region. Reports indicate the suspect is a close associate of the cell leader for the terrorist network in the city, which is involved in attacks against Coalition forces, beheadings, sniper and improvised explosive device attacks, and foreign terrorist facilitation. In addition to the wanted individual, the ground force detained one suspected terrorist. During an operation in Baqubah today, Coalition forces detained three suspected terrorists, to include a wanted individual allegedly involved in the planning of an improvised explosive device attack in Sadr City. Reports indicate the suspect is associated with a terrorist responsible for car bomb attacks in Baghdad, who has ties to the al-Qaeda in Iraq leader in the capital city.  North of Samarra this morning, Coalition forces captured an alleged terrorist senior leader tied to the al-Qaeda networks operating in Tikrit, Bayji and Mosul. Reports indicate the wanted individual is connected to terrorist leaders throughout the Tigris River Valley. Three additional suspects were also detained during the operation. During two coordinated operations in Mosul today, four suspected terrorists were detained while targeting al-Qaeda in Iraq leaders involved in the area’s terrorist network and associated with Haydar al-Afri, a terrorist leader for the western region of Mosul, who was killed Dec. 25 for his involvement in attacks against Iraqi and Coalition forces. Northeast of Taji Friday, Coalition forces captured a wanted individual believed to be associated with the al-Qaeda in Iraq network operating north of Baghdad. The network is reportedly responsible for improvised explosive device attacks, extortion, intimidation and weapons trafficking. Reports indicate the suspect is responsible for foreign terrorist facilitation, to include arranging travel for the individual detained by Coalition forces Jan. 14 for his role in attacking Iraqi citizens for not following Sharia law. In addition to the wanted individual, the ground force detained two suspected terrorists on site.

 

Tips lead to detention of 10 AQI during Operation Phantom Phoenix

TIKRIT, Iraq – Coalition Forces detained 10 suspected al Qaeda in Iraq operatives during a raid in an Al Ali village, in the northern Diyala River Valley area, known as the bread basket, Jan. 17. The successful raid was part of Operation Raider Harvest, which is part of Operation Phantom Phoenix – a countrywide operation to eliminate AQI and other extremists in Iraq. Working off tips from local Iraqis, Soldiers from 3rd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment detained the suspects at seven different locations in the village. One of the detainees is a suspected AQI company commander, four are suspected AQI fighters, two are suspected improvised-explosive-device emplacers  and three are suspected AQI informants. Since Jan. 8, with the start of the clearing phase of Raider Harvest, CF and ISF have detained 70 suspected AQI in the AO, killed four and wounded four more.  In addition, 25 IEDs have been found and cleared, along with eight vehicle-borne IEDs, six house-borne IEDs and 30 weapon caches. At the same time as the ongoing mission of clearing AQI from the bread basket, CF, ISF and Concerned Local Citizens are also conducting humanitarian aid drops, providing medical aid, delivering fuel, establishing security checkpoints and building Joint Combat outposts.  Operation Raider Harvest is not only designed to clear AQI from the bread basket , a former AQI stronghold and safe haven, but also ensure that they are unable to return.

 

Coalition disrupts al-Qaeda networks in central Iraq; one killed, 19 detained

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces killed one terrorist and detained 19 suspects today during operations targeting al-Qaeda networks in central Iraq. Near Mahmudiyah, Coalition forces targeted an alleged associate of the al-Qaeda in Iraq network operating south of Baghdad. Reports indicate the suspect is a replacement for a former leader who was detained by Coalition forces Dec. 10 for his role in terrorist attacks in the region.  As Coalition forces arrived in the area, they observed several individuals maneuver from the target buildings and supporting aircraft was called to engage the enemy force, killing one terrorist. Two suspected terrorists were also detained during the operation without incident. During an operation in Baghdad, Coalition forces captured a suspected terrorist associated with the al-Qaeda in Iraq network in Karkh. The suspect is allegedly an experienced improvised explosive device and car bomb facilitator involved in terrorist attacks throughout Baghdad. Reports indicate the individual is involved in foreign terrorist facilitation, to include receiving money for facilitators from outside of Iraq. The suspect is also allegedly associated with the al-Qaeda in Iraq senior leader for all networks operating in Baghdad. Also in the capital city, Coalition forces captured an alleged associate of a senior level al-Qaeda in Iraq foreign terrorist facilitator. The suspect is believed to have strong ties to numerous terrorist leaders in Baghdad and foreign terrorists operating in and outside of Iraq. In addition to the wanted individual, the ground force detained two suspected terrorists on site.During coordinated operations near Samarra, Coalition forces detained two suspected terrorists including an alleged al-Qaeda in Iraq member involved in terrorist media and propaganda operations. Reports indicate the suspect is tied to al-Qaeda in Iraq leadership from Samarra to Mosul, including the suspect detained Dec. 27 for his role in media operations and foreign terrorist facilitation. Coalition forces conducted a multi-day operation Jan. 17 to 19 north of Jalula, targeting associates of the al-Qaeda in Iraq network pushed from the northeast Diyala River Valley into the Hamrin mountain area. During the operation, the ground force detained 11 suspected terrorists and found a cache of weapons which was safely destroyed on site.

 

Afghan, Coalition forces detain four insurgents, insurgent leader

BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan - Afghan and Coalition forces conducted an operation Friday to degrade Taliban operations in Zabul Province detaining four insurgents and an insurgent leader. The combined forces conducted a search in the Qalat District of Zabul Province targeting Taliban insurgents conducting anti-coalition operations in the area. Reportedly, the militants have also collected money forcibly from the local residents to purchase weapons and supplies. The combined force found and detained five insurgents with suspected ties to the Taliban during the course of operations. One of the detainees identified himself as a Zabul-area Taliban commander. The detainees will be questioned regarding their involvement in Taliban operations as well as other extremist activities.

 

ANSF, Coalition forces recover weapons caches in Nangarhar

BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – Recently, Afghans provided information leading to the recovery of a suspected insurgent weapons cache in Zawa Village of Khogyani District, Nangarhar Province, near the Pakistan Border. The cache, recovered Jan. 16, consisted of 93 recoilless-rifle rounds. Insurgents frequently use these weapons to attack Afghan National Security Forces or Coalition forces, or terrorize Afghan citizens throughout the province.According to a Coalition soldier, the weapons found were in good condition. Afghan citizens reported weapons-cache locations and insurgent activity throughout Nangarhar Province. Villagers’ information led to the recovery of a suspected insurgent weapons cache, consisting of 93 recoilless-rifle rounds, in Zawa Village of Khogyani District bordering Pakistan, Jan. 16.

Oliver Stone To Direct Movie About George W. Bush

I can only imagine what a piece of crap this movie will turn out to be.

Oliver Stone has set his sights on his next directing project, "Bush," a film focusing on the life and presidency of George W. Bush, and attached Josh Brolin to play the title role. The director has begun quietly shopping a script by his "Wall Street" co-writer Stanley Weiser. Pic will be produced by Moritz Borman, who teamed with Stone on "World Trade Center" and "Alexander," and Jon Kilik, a producer of "Alexander" as well as "Pinkville," the pre-strike project about the Army's investigation of the My Lai massacre in Vietnam that Stone expected to direct until United Artists pulled the plug late last year. Borman said Weiser's script was completed before the WGA strike and was ready to shoot and that many of Stone's "Pinkville" crew jumped right into "Bush." If financing materializes quickly enough, the film could start production by April and could be in theaters for the election or the inauguration. One need only Google the words "Stone" and "Bush" to find plenty of the director's critical comments about the Bush administration's invasion of Iraq. Despite that, the director said he's not looking to make an anti-Bush polemic. His goal is to use seminal events in Bush's life to explain how he came to power, using a structure comparable to "The Queen."

Operation Phantom Phoenix air strikes take out al-Qaeda training area (Arab Jabour)

BAGHDAD – Air strikes dropped 10,000 pounds of munitions Jan. 16 on bunkers in Arab Jabour used by al-Qaeda as training sites for new recruits. Intelligence led the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Ga. to the location of the AQI bunkers. Air Force B-1 Bombers dropped 19 GBU-31s on the site. South of Zambraniyah, Soldiers from the 6th Squadron, 8th Cavalry Regt., 4th BCT, 3rd Inf. Div. found two booby-trapped houses while on a foot patrol. Air support was called by 6-8 Cav. to destroy the houses. Navy F-18 jets dropped a 500-pound bomb on each of the houses. Operation Marne Thunderbolt, a part of the country-wide Operation Phantom Phoenix, continues to relentlessly pursue al-Qaeda and other extremists elements operating south of Baghdad.

 

Coalition forces conduct air strike on al-Qaeda meeting, four terrorists killed

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces killed four terrorists Thursday during operations targeting al-Qaeda in Qulay’ah, west of Muqdadiyah. During the operation, surveillance elements positively identified several terrorists at an al-Qaeda in Iraq meeting location. Coalition forces directed a precision air strike and assessed that four terrorists were killed in the operation. Coalition forces also directed a precision air strike on a vehicle, which intelligence reports indicated was carrying an anti-aircraft weapon. The driver of the vehicle transporting the weapon was one of the terrorists killed in the initial air strike. The vehicle and weapon were destroyed to prevent future use by terrorists.

 

Al-Qaeda operations in northern Iraq disrupted; 13 killed, three detained

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces killed 13 terrorists and detained three suspects Thursday and today during operations targeting al-Qaeda networks in central and northern Iraq. Southwest of Hawijah this morning, Coalition forces targeted an alleged senior leader involved in the al-Qaeda in Iraq network operating in Kirkuk. The suspect is allegedly responsible for facilitating finances for terrorist operations in the region and involved in improvised explosive device attacks. Reports also indicate he was a close associate of Abu Harith, the senior leader of the Kirkuk terrorist network, before he was killed during a Coalition forces operation Nov. 21. As Coalition forces arrived in the target area, they were engaged by small-arms fire and rocket propelled grenades. The ground force returned fire in self-defense and called for supporting aircraft. As the firefight continued, Coalition forces observed armed terrorists emerging from the target building. Supporting aircraft engaged them and enemy personnel firing from inside the target buildings. The ground force then observed secondary explosions erupt from the buildings, indicating that explosive materials were likely stored inside. Due to the hostile environment, the ground force pulled back and called for supporting aircraft to engage the buildings to destroy any remaining explosives. The ground force assessed that a total of nine terrorists were killed during the engagement.   West of Muqdadiyah today, Coalition forces targeted alleged associates of the al-Qaeda in Iraq network operating in the northeast Diyala River Valley region. Reports indicate the individuals were associated with an al-Qaeda in Iraq meeting that was targeted by Coalition forces Thursday after they identified a terrorist transporting an anti-aircraft weapon in his vehicle (see MNF-I press release A080118a, “Coalition forces conduct air strike on al-Qaeda meeting, four terrorists killed,” dated Jan 18, 2008). Coalition forces confirmed the presence of the terrorists in the target area and called a supporting aircraft to engage, killing four terrorists and destroying two buildings believed to be used for terrorist activities. During three coordinated operations near Samarra Thursday and this morning, Coalition forces detained three suspects while targeting foreign terrorist facilitators involved in the al-Qaeda network in the city. Reports indicate that one of the suspected terrorists detained is involved in foreign terrorist facilitation and is associated with al-Qaeda members that conduct attacks against Coalition forces. The individual allegedly uses his residence as a safe haven for al-Qaeda members and foreign terrorists, and has ties to senior leaders in the network.

 

ISF, CLCs take lead in AQI clearing operation (Buhritz Al-Abarra)

BAQUBAH, Iraq – Iraqi Army Soldiers killed one enemy combatant and detained 53 suspects during a joint operation with Iraqi Police, Concerned Local Citizens and Coalition Forces in the villages of Buhritz Al-Abarra and Imam Ways, just south of Baqubah Jan. 14-16. The operation, dubbed Viking Harvest II by CF, which is part of Operation Phantom Phoenix - a country-wide effort to eliminate al-Qaeda and other extremists in Iraq - also resulted in the clearing of more than 30 improvised explosive devices, the reduction of five booby-trapped houses and the discovery of two weapon caches. The Iraqi Security Forces and CLCs took the lead in the operation, with U.S. Soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 12th Field Artillery providing support through blocking positions around the towns. Now that AQI has been cleared from the area, many local Iraqis are now returning to the villages, according to Capt. Brent Hoops, acting commander of Battery B, 2-12 FA, who noted that 375 displaced persons have returned to their homes so far. ISF and CFs are currently in the process of standing up more CLCs, creating checkpoints, and establishing a permanent IA checkpoint to ensure insurgents do not return.

 

Iraqi Army raid leads to large cache (Al Kussyat)

TIKRIT, Iraq – A raid conducted by the 2nd Iraqi Army Division in Al Kussyat, netted a large weapons cache Jan. 16. The 3rd Battalion, 4th Brigade, 2nd Iraqi Army Division’s raid was driven on information gathered from captured insurgents and resulted in the detention of two personnel. The discovered cache consisted of five mortar systems, 300 mortar rounds, 500 lbs of TNT, 50 remote control devises, 26 Katusha rockets, 25 anti-personnel mines, 600 mortar charges and other various weapons including ammunition, wires and office copy equipment.

Coalition forces capture criminal element network facilitator

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces captured a suspected criminal network facilitator early today during operations to disrupt criminal element networks in the Baghdad area. The targeted individual reportedly trained criminals to perform attacks on Coalition and Iraqi forces. He allegedly facilitated the training of numerous criminals in guerilla warfare. The wanted individual was also reported to be an associate of several other senior-level criminal element leaders who were involved in attacks on Coalition forces. Intelligence led ground forces to the target location where they captured the wanted individual without incident.

 

Al-Qaeda operations in northern Iraq disrupted; two killed, 17 detained

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces killed two terrorists and detained 17 suspects today during operations targeting al-Qaeda networks in northern Iraq. In Bi’aj, Coalition forces conducted an operation targeting an al-Qaeda in Iraq leader for the network in the western region of Mosul. Reports indicate the wanted individual is a direct associate of numerous terrorist leaders, to include the al-Qaeda in Iraq senior leader Abu Ayyub al-Masri. The suspect allegedly has a history of terrorist activity that originated in Baghdad, and is believed to have been recently appointed to a leadership position in the region after the previous terrorist leader was killed. As Coalition forces arrived in the target area, an armed terrorist ran at their position and was repeatedly directed to stop, but did not comply. Perceiving hostile intent, the ground force engaged the man and killed him. As Coalition forces continued to clear the area, they were engaged by small arms fire north of their position. A supporting aircraft was called to suppress enemy fire, killing the armed terrorist. Three suspected terrorists were also detained during the operation without further incident. During two coordinated operations in Mosul, Coalition forces targeted senior leaders involved in the al-Qaeda network operating in the city. In one location, Coalition forces captured a suspected terrorist who was allegedly operating as a judge of a terrorist illegal court system. Reports indicate the suspect is involved in the interrogation of individuals who have been kidnapped by al-Qaeda in Iraq networks and is responsible for the facilitation and maintenance of weapons caches in the area. The individual is also allegedly a subordinate of an al-Qaeda in Iraq leader for the Mosul network, who was detained Jan. 6 for his role in terrorist attacks, abductions and executions.  Intelligence reports led Coalition forces to a follow-on operation where they detained five suspected terrorists while targeting the al-Qaeda in Iraq senior leader for Mosul.  Coalition forces conducted an operation northeast of Samarra targeting associates of the al-Qaeda network in the city. Information gained from previous operations in the area led the ground force to a location where al-Qaeda in Iraq members were believed to be operating. Eight suspected terrorists were detained.

 

Coalition forces target al-Qaeda near Hamrin Lake, three terrorists killed

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces killed three terrorists today during operations targeting al-Qaeda networks north of Jalula. Intelligence reports from previous operations led Coalition forces to a location northeast of Hamrin Lake, where al-Qaeda in Iraq networks were believed to be operating. Coalition forces assessed that recent success in the Diyala River Valley region pushed these terrorists to seek safe haven in the area. As Coalition forces arrived at one of the target buildings in the area, they repeatedly called for the occupants to come out, but they did not comply. The ground force was then engaged by armed gunmen from the rooftop and surrounding courtyard. Coalition forces returned fire in self-defense and a supporting aircraft engaged to suppress the enemy force. The ground force was also engaged by an armed man near the entrance to the courtyard of the building, and pulled back to allow supporting aircraft to engage the hostile threat.  Once the enemy fire ceased, Coalition forces cleared the area and assessed that three terrorists were killed during the engagement. The ground force discovered that two women were also killed and two other women were wounded during the engagement. The wounded women received immediate medical attention by Coalition forces medical personnel before being airlifted to a military medical facility for further treatment. During another operation in the area, Coalition forces returned to a building from a previous operation and called for the building’s occupants to come out. An individual exited, but did not comply with verbal instructions and ignored warning shots. The man continued to approach the ground force and Coalition forces engaged, killing him. Similar tactics have been used in the area by suicide bombers to attack Coalition forces, and the ground force perceived hostile intent.
